Public Hearings Announced as Montgomery County Pursues Disaster Recovery Grant

Montgomery County is seeking $14.6 million in state disaster recovery funds to address ongoing housing and infrastructure needs following Hurricane Ida. The 2021 storm caused extensive damage, including flooding and a tornado, leaving many areas still in need of repair. To support this recovery effort, the county plans to apply for a community development block grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

Two public hearings are scheduled to discuss the funding request and gather input from residents. The meetings will be held on Monday, August 12, at noon, and Wednesday, August 14, at 6 p.m. at One Montgomery Plaza in Norristown, with virtual attendance available via Zoom.

The hearings will focus on the county's recovery needs, including housing, infrastructure, and mitigation efforts, with officials encouraging public participation. Written comments can also be submitted to the county's Housing and Community Development office.

Six Arrested in Catalytic Converter Fencing Operation

Lady Justice background.

Six men have been charged in a catalytic converter theft ring in southeastern Pennsylvania. The suspects, linked to two Philadelphia salvage yards, allegedly paid $300 to $1,200 for stolen converters and resold them off the books. The thefts surged during the pandemic due to high metal prices.

The accused include Daniel and Ryan McIlhenney of Folcroft, Terrell Gibson of Chester, Sharief Louden of Philadelphia, and Loai Nasser of Cherry Hill, N.J. Authorities say the thefts caused significant financial losses, with one salvage yard recording over $1 million in sales in 2023. The defendants face multiple charges, with a preliminary hearing set for August 19.

Olympic Bronze for Sam Watson Despite New World Record in Speed Climbing

Me, bouldering in Boulder Line, Montpellier France

American sport climber Sam Watson leaves the Paris Olympics with a new world record in speed climbing but without the coveted gold medal. The 18-year-old, who was the favorite for the top spot, set a new world record of 4.74 seconds in the bronze medal match after being eliminated in the semifinals by Wu Peng of China.

Watson's record-breaking performance, achieved in the third-place heat, came after he had already set a new record of 4.75 seconds in an earlier elimination round. Despite this, the gold medal went to Leonardo Veddriq of Indonesia, who won with a time of 4.75 seconds, just a fraction faster than Wu's 4.77 seconds in the final. Watson expressed pride in his achievements, acknowledging the tiny margins that make a difference in the sport.

Schwarber's Three Homers and Strahm's Retaliation Fuel Phillies' Win

The Phillies regained their spark in a 9-4 victory over the Dodgers, fueled by three home runs from Kyle Schwarber and a retaliatory pitch from Matt Strahm. The game took an intense turn in the 8th inning when Strahm drilled Gavin Lux, responding to an earlier hit on Nick Castellanos. This old-school baseball move reignited the team’s energy, coming at a crucial time as the Phillies had been in a slump since the All-Star break.

Schwarber capped off the night with his third home run in the 9th inning, sealing the series win and boosting the team’s morale. With three wins in their last four games, the Phillies are now ready to face the Diamondbacks in a four-game series.
