Rivet: Canteen & Assembly is being positioned as a central hub for the Die Laughing Downtown Pottstown Comedy Festival, building on the venue’s existing relationship with the nonprofit comedy organization.

Located at 238 E. High Street in downtown Pottstown, Rivet already hosts Die Laughing’s free weekly comedy open mics, providing a regular stage for local comedians to perform and develop new material.

Die Laughing says Rivet’s stage, sound and multimedia capabilities, bar service and multiple event spaces could accommodate a variety of festival programming, including main-stage performances, smaller showcases, workshops and community gatherings.

The venue is housed in the historic New York Plaza building, which dates to 1921. According to the organization’s post, the property was once home to the New York Cut Price Department Store, later known as the New York Store, which served Pottstown shoppers until closing in 1986.

Die Laughing sees the combination of Rivet’s entertainment capabilities, downtown location and local history as a natural fit for the comedy festival.

Following a sold-out appearance at the historic SunnyBrook Ballroom, Chubby Checker is already scheduled to return to Pottstown for another performance.

“King of The Twist: Chubby Checker at SunnyBrook” will take place Saturday, March 27, with the show beginning at 6 p.m. and doors opening at 5 p.m. The performance will be held at the Historic SunnyBrook Ballroom, 50 SunnyBrook Road in Pottstown.

Checker rose to prominence in 1960 with his recording of “The Twist” and became closely associated with the dance craze. His career has continued for more than six decades.

Tickets for the upcoming Pottstown show are $40 for general admission and $60 for preferred seating, which includes the 15 tables closest to the stage and dance floor. All tickets include table seating, with general admission seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Free parking will be available, along with a full bar and food inside the showroom before and during the performance. Tickets must be purchased directly through SoulJoel’s, and all sales are final and non-refundable.
