🔔 Pottstown History: The Flying Merkel, a Racing Motorcycle Built in Pottstown

For a couple of years around 1909 to 1911, one of America’s most advanced motorcycles was built right here in Pottstown.

After Joseph Merkel’s Milwaukee company joined the Light Manufacturing and Foundry Company, the orange “Flying Merkel” came out of Pottstown with a patented spring front fork that the Pottstown Historical Society calls the forerunner of the modern telescopic front fork.

The Historical Society also notes that a young test rider, Maldwyn Jones, defeated the reigning champion Erwin “Cannonball” Baker in a ten-mile race on one of Merkel’s machines.

In 1911 the Miami Cycle company bought Merkel, and production moved to Middletown, Ohio.
