Pottstown’s $64.4 Million Draft Budget Calls for 5.89% Tax Increase, or 6.42% With Full Library Request

Pottstown’s $64.4 million draft 2027 budget, presented to borough council on Oct. 13, calls for a 5.89 percent tax increase to close a $724,754 deficit.
For a home assessed at $100,000, that works out to $91.92 more a year, or $100.16 (a 6.42 percent increase) if council gives the library the full 20 percent increase it requested, up to $65,000.
Borough Manager Justin Keller said the first staff draft pointed to a hike of 13 or 14 percent before expenses were cut and revenue sources added.
The draft also keeps a $5,000 line for feral cat spay and neuter vouchers.

🔔 Pottstown History: When Local Factories Went to War

When World War II came, Pottstown’s factories went to war.
The Doehler die-casting plant grew to about 3,200 workers and, The Mercury reported in 2000, produced nearly 10,000 parts for the war effort, while Pottstown Metal Products built boiler heaters and deck machinery for Navy ships, Neapco made anti-aircraft shells, Gudebrod made parachute shroud lines and sutures, and Jacobs Aircraft built engines for training planes.
Women worked as inspectors and machine operators in many of those plants, and one told The Mercury, “They told us from the beginning, when the boys come back, you go.”
