Giovanni’s 724 Restaurant Looks
Back on Its Beginnings in 2009

Giovanni’s 724 Restaurant is taking a look back at how much the family business has changed since first opening its doors in 2009.
The restaurant recently shared then-and-now photos highlighting its transformation over the years. The Picone family credited years of hard work, sacrifice and support from loyal customers for helping the restaurant grow.

Owners also reflected on the relationships built along the way, from watching customers’ children grow up to being part of family celebrations and other special occasions.
While the restaurant may look different than it did when it opened, the Picone family said its focus remains on serving customers and maintaining the welcoming, family atmosphere that has been part of Giovanni’s from the beginning.
The restaurant is also inviting longtime customers to share their memories of Giovanni’s from its early years.
Big Phil’s Shares Beloved Chocolate Cake Recipe With Customers After Closing

Following its final night in business, Big Phil’s Bar & Grill is leaving customers with a way to recreate one of its familiar desserts at home.
After receiving requests from customers, the restaurant shared the recipe for BP’s Chocolate Cake, including its chocolate buttercream and the raspberry sauce traditionally spread between the cake layers.
The recipe was shared by Phil’s Mom, who noted that the restaurant also used King Arthur Cake & Bread Enhancer powder. That ingredient was left off the standard recipe because it is less commonly found in home kitchens, but those who purchase it can follow the directions on the product label.
The cake was traditionally finished with chocolate buttercream and raspberry sauce between the layers, with whipped cream and a shot of milk served on the side.
BP’s Chocolate Cake Recipe
Makes one two-layer cake
Cake Ingredients
2 cups sugar
1¾ cups King Arthur all-purpose flour
¾ cup Ghirardelli Majestic Cocoa
1½ teaspoons baking powder
1½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon espresso powder
3 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup chocolate milk, room temperature
½ cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon pure vanilla
1 cup boiling water
Optional: King Arthur Cake & Bread Enhancer powder may be used according to the directions on its label.
Cake Preparation
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. The original recipe notes this temperature was calculated for a convection oven. Spray the cake pans, line with parchment rounds and spray the parchment.
In a mixer bowl, stir together all dry ingredients on low speed.
Lightly whisk the eggs in a separate bowl. Add the eggs and remaining wet ingredients to the dry mixture, except for the boiling water. Mix on low until combined.
Stop the mixer and scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl. Mix on medium for 2 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the water until boiling.
Stir in the boiling water, scraping the sides and bottom until completely incorporated. The batter will be thin.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool the cakes in their pans on a cooling rack for 10 minutes. Remove from the pans and allow them to cool completely before wrapping or icing.
BP’s Chocolate Buttercream
Ingredients
1¼ cups (2½ sticks) Cabot unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
3½ cups powdered sugar
¾ cup Ghirardelli cocoa powder
3-5 tablespoons heavy cream, room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla
¼ teaspoon salt
Preparation
Using a paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes.
Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, heavy cream, salt and vanilla. Mix on low for 30 seconds, then increase to high speed for 1 minute.
If the frosting needs to be thicker, add an additional ¼ cup powdered sugar or cocoa powder. If it is too firm, add 1 tablespoon heavy cream.
Spread a thin layer of raspberry sauce between the two cake layers before finishing with the chocolate buttercream.
For the full Big Phil’s experience, serve with whipped cream and a shot of milk on the side.
