Route 422 East Right-Lane Closure Thursday

PennDOT will close the right lane of eastbound U.S. Route 422 on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., between the Hanover Street interchange and the Sanatoga ramps in Lower Pottsgrove and North Coventry. Paving and shoulder work is part of PennDOT’s $83.6 million project to reconstruct and improve about 2.1 miles of the expressway, and that the schedule depends on weather. Drivers should allow extra time through the work area.

Pottstown History:
Dec. 13, 1890 High Street Fire

Just after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 1890, ironworker Henry Rau was walking home along the 200 block of High Street when he spotted a red glow in a storefront, the start of what The Mercury later called the worst fire in Pottstown history. A strong northwest wind drove the blaze through aging commercial buildings packed cheek by jowl with no firewalls, while local volunteers fought freezing hoses and mud-clogged hydrants and Reading and Boyertown companies steamed in by special train. By morning eight businesses on the north side of the block were gone and losses ran to about $175,000 then, but no one died. The Beecher dry-goods house rebuilt larger, and that rebuild later became the Ellis Mills department store neighbors still remember as a downtown landmark. With Christmas less than two weeks away, merchants like Howard Leopold were already renting vacant storefronts and calling dressmakers back to work within days.
