OJR school board seeking replacement

after Pederson resigns

Worn wooden gavel head with soft chamber-wood bokeh

Owen J. Roberts School Board President Rita Pederson has resigned, with Superintendent Will Stout announcing the news to staff and the community. Pederson, first elected in 2021 and unanimously made president in 2022, cited a demanding new job and said she could not keep giving the district 110 percent. The board will set an application deadline, choose interim officers through the Dec. 7 reorganization, and appoint a replacement through fall 2027; interested neighbors can send a letter of interest and resume to the board secretary at the district address.

Pottstown History:

George Yost Coffin

Antique crow-quill dip pen nib with ink sheen

George Yost Coffin was born March 3, 1850, in the Yost Mansion at High and Charlotte, the house that later became the Bahr Arcade and is a parking lot today. Family ties to Congressman Jacob Yost helped draw his mother to Pottstown; the Coffins then raised George in Washington, where he kept a Treasury clerk’s job by day and drew for Harper’s, Puck, and The Washington Post. When he died in the capital on Nov. 28, 1896, his body came home to Edgewood beside his mother under the towering Yost-family obelisk. Tens of thousands of Americans once recognized his cartoons; most Pottstown neighbors today would not recognize his name. The surprise is how far a High Street mansion baby’s pencil traveled, and that it came back.
