Pottstown History:
Archie Royer, Walnut Street acrobat

Archie Royer was born Dec. 14, 1869, in Pottstown and grew up at 444 Walnut Street before tumbling for pennies outside local cigar stores. As a boy he ran away hatless in short pants with the Bachlor and Dorr Circus, then returned with his father's consent as a tumbler and talking clown, later working summers with Ringling Brothers and other big shows. In 1898 he opened his own acrobatic farce "Next Door" to a sold-out Grand Opera House crowd before touring Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Ohio. In July 1950, at age 81, he came home for a Mercury-covered Hookies Fire Company tap exhibition; he died Sep. 20, 1956, about 70 years before this Sunday's send.
