Church site plan changes anger council
Brick veneer fight at Chestnut & N. Hanover

Pottstown Borough Council tabled an update on six twin townhouses planned for the former Transfiguration Lutheran Church site at Chestnut and N. Hanover after Planning Commission member Thomas Hylton flagged developer Greg Lingo’s shifting elevations from solid brick to thin-cut / “real brick” veneer.
The review period was extended to Nov. 2, with the matter pushed to next month’s council calendar. Facts only from The Mercury’s Evan Brandt report.
N. Hanover Street bridge rename
proposed for Cmdr. Job W. Price

The Pottstown Post (Sept. 14, 2026) says legislation introduced would rename Pottstown’s North Hanover Street bridge the Commander Job W. Price Memorial Bridge. Price, a Pottstown High graduate and former Navy SEAL, died in December 2012 of non-combat injuries while supporting village stability operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan.
The bill still needs committees, the Legislature, and the governor before any rename. Warm memorial framing only; distinct from earlier license-plate day coverage.

Arts district eyed for downtown
BID five-year plan for N. Charlotte / Beech

Main Street Manager Danielle Kangas and the Business Improvement District presented a five-year arts-district plan at the Sept. 9 council workshop. The focus is N. Charlotte between High and Beech and along Beech to Evans, including ArtFusion, citing about 10 vacant storefronts.
First step is an advisory committee, then Art Walks and pop-ups. Distinct from this week’s street-pianos coverage.
Coolidge Commons 64 townhomes
Preliminary OK from
Upper Pottsgrove + Pottstown

Upper Pottsgrove commissioners and Pottstown Borough Council gave preliminary approval to Coolidge Commons: 64 townhomes in 11 buildings along the north side of Wilson Street, with secondary access via an improved Coolidge Street paper street.
The plan still needs planning commissions, engineering, and Montgomery County Conservation District review before building. Preliminary only; not the separate Design Pro apartment proposal on Coolidge Drive.
Pottstown History:
The Jim Crow North / Matthew Washington

Pottstown native and Prairie View A&M historian Matthew George Washington’s 2024 book The Jim Crow North argues this small industrial borough was a significant hub of interracial civil-rights activism. What set Pottstown apart, he writes, was local Black leadership plus sustained advocacy in The Mercury under founding editor Shandy Hill.
Named neighbors in the Mercury’s coverage include the Corum brothers, Rev. Heywood Butler, Newstell Marable of the NAACP chapter, and the Pottstown Committee on Human Relations after Brown v. Board. Neighbors know steel and pies; fewer know this mid-century advocacy story.
