Pottstown History:
Anna Maria Schoener/Jones - High Street rebuild

Anna Maria Schoener was born May 22, 1753, in today’s Lower Pottsgrove. She married George Spangler in 1775 at Old St. Joseph’s Church in Philadelphia, then survived his Aug. 14, 1778, hanging for aiding the British during the Revolution.
She rebuilt on High Street as a tavern, livery, and store keeper with about a 150-foot front near the later Van Buskirk site, running an inn and dry-goods stop that neighbors would have known as a stagecoach landmark. Mercury First History columns by Michael Snyder also note she left about half an acre for Pottstown’s early Catholic burial ground.
