Free car-seat fittings
Oct 9 at Goodwill Fire
Montgomery County Health and Human Services and Safe Kids Southeastern Pennsylvania are hosting free certified car-seat fittings Friday, Oct. 9, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Goodwill Fire Company, 714 E. High St., Pottstown.
A second session is set for Oct. 14 in Norristown. Appointments are required. The fittings are educational checks, not install service; bring your manuals if you have them.
Free illegible license-plate replacement
Tue Sep 22 Lower Pottsgrove
Free help replacing illegible license plates being offered Tuesday, Sept. 22, 4 to 6 p.m. at Gerald Richards Park, 2150 Buchert Rd. in Lower Pottsgrove.
Rep. Joe Ciresi's office and Lower Pottsgrove Police are hosting the plate-check event. Bring the plate that needs replacing; officers can help with the forms.
SRT Cycle and Stay
Oct 3-4 overnight adventure
Schuylkill River Greenways' first-party Cycle and Stay page describes a two-day trail ride: park at Valley Forge, shuttle to Reading, ride Reading to Pottstown on Saturday and Pottstown back to Valley Forge on Sunday.
The $50 fee covers the shuttle and bike support. Overnight lodging in Pottstown is booked separately. Distinct from Ride for the River and the earlier Greenways grant story.
Ice Cream 5K / Kids Fun Run

RunSignup lists the Tuesdays in the Park Ice Cream 5K and Kids Fun Run makeup date Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Riverfront Park in Pottstown after the July 28 thunderstorms canceled the original.
Kids mile starts at 6 p.m.; the 5K follows at 6:15 p.m. Series-makeup night with earlier sunset times than the summer schedule.

Pottstown History:
Washington did not headquarter at Pottsgrove Manor
A 1948 Pennsylvania historical marker once posted outside Pottsgrove Manor claimed George Washington was headquartered there in September 1777. Museum educator Anna E. Meitzler told the Reading Eagle that Washington was camped near Pottsgrove, and over the years the word "near" got dropped.
The marker now sits inside the museum as a cautionary exhibit. Hotel-era "Washington Slept Here" marketing and a chair plaque saying he sat there get the same myth-bust. Camp Pottsgrove was nearby in today's Lower Frederick, New Hanover, and Lower Pottsgrove, so the army was in the area even if the Manor was never the headquarters.
