Pottstown History:

Hugh High rode a high-wheeler to Nebraska

Most neighbors know High Street as the borough's main drag. Fewer know that on the night of October 10, 1885, a local musician rolled back into town on a 50-inch high-wheeler after riding it to Nebraska and back.

Hugh J. High, born in Warwick Township on April 26, 1858, played in a U.S. Army band from 1880-82, then joined Pottstown's new wheelmen group in 1884. He left on May 4, 1885, on an Expert Columbia, spent nearly two months visiting friends in Seward, Nebraska, came home by way of Kansas, and at 7:30 p.m. that October evening the cycling club and a band paraded him down High Street.

The Pottstown Historical Society puts the trip at 2,665 miles and still keeps his daily diary; a SABR biography notes his namesake nephew, also a Pottstown High, later played outfield for the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees.
