Passenger Rail Project Connecting
Reading, Pottstown, Phoenixville,
and Philadelphia Moves Forward

Plans to restore passenger rail service between Reading, Pottstown, Phoenixville, and Philadelphia have taken a significant step forward following a new agreement between Amtrak and the Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority (SRPRA).
The agreement launches the next phase of planning and development for the proposed rail corridor, which would restore passenger service to communities that have been without trains since 1981, when SEPTA discontinued service.
The proposed route would connect Reading's Franklin Street Station, stations in Pottstown and Phoenixville, and Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, providing a new transportation option for commuters, travelers, and visitors.
The Federal Railroad Administration selected the project for federal planning support in 2023, recognizing it as one of a select group of rail corridors with strong potential for future passenger service. Officials say much of the required infrastructure is already in place, including double-track sections, signaling systems, and Positive Train Control.
Current estimates place the rail portion of the project at approximately $100 million, though station renovations and related improvements would require additional local funding.
If planning, funding, and agreements with freight rail operators continue to move forward, passenger service could begin as early as 2030, with plans calling for seven to eight daily round trips. Amtrak is currently conducting ridership and cost analyses while negotiations continue with freight rail companies that own portions of the corridor.
Officials also envision future connections that could allow travelers to continue on to destinations such as New York City and Washington, D.C.

Oscar Mayer Wienermobile Rolling
into Boyertown Oktoberfest Kickoff

A larger-than-life guest is making a stop in Boyertown as the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile joins the kickoff celebration for Boyertown's 19th Annual Oktoberfest.
The iconic 27-foot-long hot dog on wheels will be parked along Philadelphia Avenue on Friday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 9 p.m., giving visitors the chance to snap photos, check out the famous vehicle up close, and pick up one of the brand's signature Hotdogger whistles.
To mark the special appearance, Oktoberfest organizers are also moving up the start of beer service. Instead of the usual 6 p.m. opening, beer will begin pouring at 5 p.m. Friday evening.
The Wienermobile's appearance is part of the festivities leading into Boyertown's annual Oktoberfest celebration, offering another unique attraction for attendees to enjoy.
