Perseid Meteor Shower Expected to Peak This Week Despite Bright Moonlight

Skywatchers across the United States will have an opportunity to catch the annual Perseid meteor shower as it reaches its peak on Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, although viewing conditions may be affected by a bright moon.

The Perseids are one of the year's most popular meteor showers, known for producing fast, bright meteors as Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

Astronomers say the best viewing opportunities will come after midnight and before dawn. While the moon's brightness may wash out many of the fainter meteors this year, brighter shooting stars should still be visible, especially from locations away from city lights.

Observers are encouraged to find a dark, open area with an unobstructed view of the sky, allow their eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness, and avoid looking at phones or other bright lights.

No special equipment is needed to enjoy the meteor shower.

Viewing Tips

🌠 Event: Perseid Meteor Shower Peak

πŸ“… Best Viewing: Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning

πŸ•› Best Time: After midnight until dawn

πŸŒ™ Conditions: A bright moon may reduce visibility of fainter meteors.

πŸ“ Where to Watch:

  • Find a dark location away from city lights.

  • Choose an area with a wide, unobstructed view of the sky.

  • Allow 20–30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

πŸ” Equipment: None neededβ€”meteors are best viewed with the naked eye.
