One Death, Higher Taxes
Here's the math most couples never see coming.
When one spouse passes, the survivor usually keeps most of the household income — but starts filing as a single taxpayer. Same IRA. Same required distributions. Roughly half the standard deduction, and tax brackets that compress to nearly twice the rate at the same income.
It's called the survivor's tax trap, and it's one of the most preventable problems in retirement — if you act while both spouses are alive and rates are still low.
Craig Wear, CFP®, has walked 3,000+ families with $1M+ in IRAs through exactly this planning. His new book, Roth Conversion Reset, lays out the year-by-year framework for converting at today's rates so the tax problem never lands on the person you love most.
The book is free. Full PDF, in your inbox in minutes.

Boyertown Community Library Launching Weekly Writers' Circle for Adults
The Boyertown Community Library will launch a new Writers' Circle on Thursday, July 30, offering adults ages 18 and older a welcoming space to develop their writing skills and connect with fellow writers.
Meeting every Thursday from 2 to 3:30 p.m., the free program is designed for adults actively working on original writing projects, including fiction, poetry, essays, memoirs, songwriting, playwriting, and other creative works. Participants will have opportunities to share works in progress, exchange ideas, set writing goals, and encourage one another in a supportive environment.
The inaugural meeting will feature Pennsylvania author Dana Kramaroff, whose debut middle-grade novel, The Do More Club, was published by Penguin Random House in 2023. Kramaroff will discuss her path to traditional publishing, offer advice for aspiring writers, answer questions, and read an excerpt from her novel.
The Writers' Circle will be facilitated by Michele Barrett, M.Ed., a local educator and grant writer.
To encourage meaningful discussion, attendance will be limited, and advance registration is recommended. Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook, laptop, or printed pages of their own original writing. The library noted that AI-generated writing will not be shared or discussed during meetings.
Participation is free.
