Salvation Army of Pottstown Continues Summer Meal Program for Children
The Salvation Army of Pottstown is reminding the community that its summer meal program helps ensure children continue to receive nutritious meals while school is out of session.
The organization serves a free hot lunch every Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., providing an important resource for families during the summer months when school cafeterias are closed.
Community members who wish to support the program can make a financial contribution to help provide meals for local children. According to The Salvation Army, a $50 donation can help provide meals for approximately 20 children.
The organization encourages residents to support the effort to help combat childhood hunger in the Pottstown area.
Remembering Pottstownโs
High Street Flood July 11th, 2019

Remembering the July 11, 2019 Flash Flood That Changed Pottstown
It was supposed to be just another summer thunderstorm.
Instead, on the evening of July 11, 2019, torrential rain transformed streets into rivers as Manatawny Creek surged out of its banks, creating one of the most destructive flash floods Pottstown had experienced in decades.
In just a matter of hours, more than four inches of rain fell across portions of Montgomery and Berks counties. The sudden downpour overwhelmed creeks and storm drains, sending floodwaters racing through neighborhoods, businesses, parks, and major roadways.
High Street Turned Into a River
The flooding struck with little warning.
Along High Street and near College Drive, water rose so quickly that motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles. Several carsโand even a work truckโwere completely submerged as emergency crews carried out multiple water rescues.
Business owners watched helplessly as floodwaters poured into storefronts, causing extensive property damage. For many longtime residents, it was the worst flooding they had witnessed since Hurricane Agnes devastated the area in 1972.
Parks and Infrastructure Left in Ruins
The force of the flood didn't stop at downtown streets.
Manatawny Creek overflowed with tremendous power, heavily damaging Manatawny Memorial Park. Roads washed away, pedestrian bridges were destroyed, and large sections of the park required months of repairs before reopening.
Across the region, flooded roadways, damaged infrastructure, and washed-out areas created widespread transportation and safety challenges.
A Tragic Night for the Region
While Pottstown experienced significant destruction, the storm's most heartbreaking impact occurred in nearby Douglass Township, Berks County.
Two people lost their lives after their vehicle was swept away by rapidly moving floodwatersโa tragic reminder of how quickly flash floods can become deadly.
More Than $1 Million in Damage
In the days that followed, residents and business owners faced the exhausting task of cleaning flooded basements, removing mud and debris, and assessing the damage.
Borough officials estimated local losses exceeded $1 million. Despite the widespread destruction, the total damage fell short of the threshold required for federal disaster assistance, leaving many property owners to shoulder the recovery costs themselves.
Even years later, the July 11, 2019 flash flood remains one of the most unforgettable weather events in Pottstown's recent historyโand a reminder of just how quickly conditions can change when heavy rain falls across the Manatawny Creek watershed.
