Grumpy's Hand-Carved Sandwiches Brings 50 Years of Experience to Pottstown Catering

For Eugene Dugan, owner of Grumpy's Hand-Carved Sandwiches, food isn't just a business, it's a lifetime passion that started when he was just 13 years old. Now 65 and semi-retired, Dugan continues to serve the Pottstown community through his catering operation, bringing more than five decades of culinary experience to every event.

"For 15 years, 15 and a half years, we made everything in-house. We cook our own turkeys, make our own corned beefs, make our own soups and salads in-house, all natural," Dugan explains. While he's stepped back from daily restaurant operations, he's still very much in the game, focusing on catering and specialty items that showcase his commitment to quality.

What sets Grumpy's apart in a competitive catering market? According to Dugan, it's simple: "I believe that we give them a more personal touch." That personal approach means customizing menus to fit each customer's needs, preferences, and budget. Popular choices include roast turkey, pulled pork, and corned beef, paired with signature homemade sides like coleslaw and corn and barley salad.

The proof of Grumpy's quality is in the relationships Dugan has built over the years. "I still get callbacks from customers 15, 16 years ago," he notes with evident pride. His philosophy is straightforward: stay genuine and stay in tune with your customer base.

For anyone considering Grumpy's for their next event, Dugan offers a clear promise: "You'll get a good quality food for a reasonable price." With half a century of experience backing every plate, that's a promise worth taking seriously.

Ciresi Proposes Three-Year Moratorium

on AI Chatbot Toys for Children

State Rep. Joe Ciresi has introduced legislation that would place a three-year moratorium on the sale of artificial intelligence chatbot-enabled toys for children in Pennsylvania while researchers and policymakers study the technology's potential effects.

House Bill 2637 would temporarily halt the sale of toys equipped with AI-powered conversational capabilities, including internet-connected plush toys, robots, and other products that can engage children in real-time dialogue.

Ciresi said concerns about the technology stem from reports indicating some AI-enabled toys have discussed inappropriate subjects with children and provided information related to potentially dangerous activities. The proposal is intended to give lawmakers, researchers, and industry leaders time to better understand the impact these products may have on child safety and development.

The legislation also raises concerns about privacy, noting that AI-enabled devices may collect personal information such as voice recordings, facial recognition data, and other sensitive information through connected technologies.

In addition, experts continue to study how long-term interaction with AI-driven companions could affect children's social and emotional development. Critics of the technology argue that children may form strong attachments to AI-powered toys that lack the interpersonal qualities and boundaries found in human relationships.

Ciresi said the proposal is part of a broader effort to address emerging issues surrounding artificial intelligence and consumer protection, particularly as AI technologies become more integrated into everyday life.

Fatal Walnut Street Stabbing Case

Ryan Grace (Image via Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office)

A man described by authorities as homeless and known to frequent the Pottstown area has been ordered to stand trial in Montgomery County Court on homicide charges stemming from a fatal stabbing earlier this year.

Ryan Scott Grace, 37, was held for court following a preliminary hearing before District Judge Edward C. Kropp Sr. Grace faces charges of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and possession of an instrument of crime in connection with the death of Shaquille Kare Nicholas, 33.

The charges stem from an incident on May 6 at a residence in the 300 block of Walnut Street in Pottstown. Police responded to the home shortly after 2 p.m. following reports of a stabbing and found Nicholas suffering from a chest wound. He was transported to Pottstown Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Prosecutors presented testimony from Nicholas' roommate, Montgomery County Detective John Wittenberger, and Pottstown Police Officer Caleb Whitney during the hearing. Authorities allege that Nicholas and Grace were involved in an argument inside a bedroom before the stabbing occurred.

According to investigators, witnesses reported hearing the two men arguing before Grace allegedly left the room and fled the residence. Nicholas then emerged with a severe chest injury and informed others that he had been stabbed. Emergency responders were summoned, and attempts were made to provide first aid before Nicholas was transported to the hospital.

An autopsy later determined that Nicholas died from a stab wound to the chest, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Court documents indicate investigators learned the men had reportedly been using methamphetamine prior to the incident and had argued over a cellphone before the confrontation escalated.

Grace remains charged and is scheduled for formal arraignment in Montgomery County Court in July, where further proceedings and a trial date will be established.
