Keim Street Bridge Project

Shows Major Progress

After more than a decade of closure, the long-awaited reconstruction of the Keim Street Bridge is showing significant signs of progress.

The bridge, which connects Pottstown and North Coventry Township across the Schuylkill River, has been closed since 2010 due to structural issues. Originally built in 1935, the 800-foot steel truss bridge has remained a critical missing link for local transportation.

Construction is now actively underway, with H&K Group leading the project. Local officials report that work is advancing quickly, with some indications the project may even be ahead of schedule.

The new bridge will include two 11-foot travel lanes, 4-foot shoulders, and a 6-foot sidewalk, aiming to improve both vehicle and pedestrian access.

Current projections place completion in late 2027, though continued progress could potentially move that timeline forward. Once finished, the bridge is expected to significantly improve connectivity and travel throughout the region.

Route 422 Lane Closures Set for April 6–10

Drivers who travel along Route 422 should prepare for delays as PennDOT begins lane closures next week as part of ongoing infrastructure improvements.

The closures will take place between the Sanatoga and Hanover Street interchanges, affecting portions of Montgomery and Chester counties, and will run from Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10. The project covers approximately 2.1 miles of roadway and includes bridge replacement work.

According to PennDOT, westbound lanes will be restricted from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., while eastbound lanes will see closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

Officials are warning motorists to expect significant traffic delays and are encouraging commuters to allow extra travel time or consider alternate routes during the construction period.

While the short-term inconvenience may impact daily travel, the work is part of a long-term improvement project aimed at enhancing roadway safety and efficiency.

Pottstown Nights Car Shows

Hosted by the Red Horse Motoring Club, the shows will take place on May 2, June 6, July 11, August 1 and September 5, running from 3 to 9 p.m. each evening.

The events are free to attend and welcome a wide variety of vehicles, including cars, trucks and motorcycles. Streets will close at 1 p.m. to allow for setup, with participant entry at Queen and South Hanover streets.

Each show will feature food trucks, vendors, live entertainment and family-friendly activities, creating a full afternoon and evening of entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

PECO Rate Hike Proposal Draws

Pushback from Lawmakers

A proposed rate increase by PECO could lead to higher utility bills for residents across the region beginning in 2027, prompting concern and pushback from local lawmakers.

The utility company has filed a plan to raise electric rates by 12.5% and natural gas rates by 11.4%, affecting more than 2 million customers in southeastern Pennsylvania. For the average household, the increase would mean an estimated $20 more per month for electricity and about $14.50 more for natural gas.

The proposal comes shortly after customers experienced a roughly 10% rate increase in early 2026, adding to concerns about affordability.

In response, Montgomery County lawmakers have formally urged the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to reject the proposal, citing the financial strain on residents. State legislators have also advanced a Ratepayer Protection Bill as part of the broader debate.

The PUC is expected to hold public input hearings in June, with a final decision anticipated later this year, giving residents an opportunity to voice their opinions.
