New State Budget Provides Record Funding for Pennsylvania Schools
Governor Josh Shapiro’s 2024-25 state budget, which includes a historic $1.3 billion increase in education funding, has significantly benefited the Pottstown School District. The district will receive an additional $4.28 million in state funding. Superintendent Stephen Rodriguez expressed gratitude, noting the funds will support new programs, teacher retention, facility improvements, and taxpayer relief. The Pottstown School Board has not raised property taxes for over five years. The additional funds will support new instructional programs, hiring and retaining qualified teachers, facility improvements, and taxpayer relief efforts.
Berks County districts will receive over $57 million in new funding, with Reading School District gaining the most significant share, including a $10 million increase in basic education funding and $25.6 million from the Ready to Learn Block Grant. Local education leaders, including those from Wilson and Muhlenberg districts, praised the budget for addressing rising educational costs and supporting mental health and safety initiatives.
Chester County schools also benefit. Pottsgrove will see an increase of $1.38 million, and Spring-Ford will gain $1.67 million. State Rep. Joe Ciresi highlighted the budget's positive impact on local schools and property taxpayers.

From Berks to Paris: Local Olympians Make Their Mark

Berks County celebrates as local athletes excel at the Paris Olympics. The 20-year-old University of Notre Dame student, Chris Guiliano, secured gold for swimming in his first Olympics.
The excitement extends to field hockey, with local players representing Team USA. Meredith, a graduate of Emmaus and now an Olympian, has her family beaming with pride. Lisa Gaumer, her aunt, expressed overwhelming joy, especially given their field hockey roots.
A big watch party at Alburtis Tavern saw fans cheering for the US women's field hockey team. Twin Valley field hockey coach Kim Walsh highlighted the significance for the community, saying, "This level of play is so great and you can learn so much."
From swimming to field hockey, local athletes are giving their communities plenty to cheer about in Paris.
Phillies' Skid Continues with 14-4 Loss to Yankees

The Phillies continue their rough stretch, losing their fourth straight series opener after winning 10 of their last 12 games. Zack Wheeler, who struggled with control, allowed seven earned runs over seven hits, raising his ERA from 2.55 to 2.94. He surrendered three solo home runs early and gave up four more runs in a grueling fifth inning, including a two-run double to Soto and a two-run triple to Austin Wells.
This was Wheeler's second poor outing against top AL East teams, with 21 of his 43 earned runs this season coming in just three games. Phillies fans at Citizens Bank Park faced disappointment, with a significant number of Yankees supporters present. Despite their recent struggles, the Phillies still hold the best record in the sport at 65-41 but have been inconsistent since early June.
