Emergency Preparedness: Montgomery County Hosts Free KI and NARCAN Event
The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Office of Public Health (MCOPH) will distribute free potassium iodide (KI) tablets and NARCAN kits on Thursday, July 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bethel Community Church of Pottstown, 575 N Keim St. No registration is required.
Residents within a 10-mile radius of the Limerick Generating Station will receive a two-day supply of KI tablets, which protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine during emergencies. Instructions for use and storage are included. KI is safe for all, except those allergic to iodine. Businesses will have a separate distribution event announced later.
KI tablets are available year-round at the Pottstown Health Center, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The annual drive-through KI event will be on August 24 at Limerick Fire Station.
Free NARCAN kits, used to counteract opioid overdoses, will also be available on July 25. Kits are first-come, first-served. Businesses can request NARCAN and training through the online Narcan Request Form.

Pottstown School District Awarded $17,200 Grant for Special Education
The Pottstown School District has been awarded a $17,200 workforce grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to develop future special education teachers, as announced by state Rep. Joe Ciresi, D-Montgomery, on July 22.
“This grant is crucial for providing specially trained teachers who can meet the unique needs of special education students, helping them thrive intellectually, socially, and emotionally,” Ciresi stated. “Amid a statewide teacher shortage, this funding will create new learning opportunities for Pottstown students and promote career paths in special education, ensuring all students receive a quality education.”
The Developing Future Special Educator grants are designed to help local education agencies create experiential learning opportunities for students with disabilities. This initiative supports the department’s ongoing efforts to build a strong teacher pipeline and retention program, ensuring that students of all abilities have access to excellent education in the future.
Join the Community Cleanup on High Street This Saturday

Hobart's Run and Sweatchasers Youth Boxing Camp are organizing a community cleanup and gathering on Saturday, July 27, starting at 8 a.m. The event, co-sponsored by Montgomery Lodge #1271 and The Alley on High Street, will focus on the 400 block of High Street and areas extending toward Beech Street. This initiative promotes community pride and collaboration. Residents are encouraged to join in and help. The event features live entertainment, music by DJ Jam, and refreshments.
Veteran Goalie Nicole Barnhart Returns Home with Washington Spirit
At 42, Nicole Barnhart continues to impact women’s soccer both on and off the field. The Gilbertsville native and Boyertown High School graduate returned home recently as a backup goalie for the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Playing against Mexico’s Chivas Femenil at Subaru Park in Chester, Barnhart enjoyed reconnecting with family and old friends despite not playing in the Spirit’s 2-1 win.
Barnhart's 17-year career includes playing for FC Delco, Souderton, Boyertown SC, and Stanford University. She earned 54 caps with the U.S. Women’s National Team, winning two Olympic gold medals. Her club career spans teams like FC Gold Pride, Philadelphia Independence, FC Kansas City, Utah Royals FC, and now the Spirit.
As the NWSL’s oldest player, Barnhart values mentoring younger players and contributing to the league’s growth. She double-majored in Art and Psychology at Stanford and is considering a future in coaching. Recently inducted into the Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame, Barnhart remains dedicated to improving her game and helping the Spirit win a championship.
Castellanos’ Two-Run Double Secures 3-0 Win for Phillies

Nick Castellanos' clutch two-run double in the ninth inning helped the Phillies end their 16-inning scoreless streak and secure a 3-0 win over the Twins. Facing top closer Jhoan Duran, Bryce Harper started the rally with a double, followed by walks from Alec Bohm and J.T. Realmuto. Brandon Marsh’s sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run.
Zack Wheeler’s stellar performance, pitching seven shutout innings and striking out seven, set the stage for the comeback. Matt Strahm closed the game with an 11-pitch inning for his first save of the season.
