Scam Alert: Berks County Residents Targeted by Cryptocurrency Fraud
The Berks County District Attorney's Office has issued a warning to residents about a phone scam on the rise in the area. Scammers are making calls, often spoofing numbers from the Berks County Sheriff's Department, to trick victims into thinking they've missed jury duty or failed to comply with a court subpoena.
These scammers use the names and numbers of active sheriff deputies and judges, claiming victims must choose between a new court appearance, imprisonment, or a "civil option" that involves paying money via a cryptocurrency ATM. The DA's Office emphasized that these ATMs are favored by scammers due to the irreversibility and difficulty in tracing transactions.
Residents are reminded that the Berks County Sheriff's Office will never solicit money over the phone for missed jury duty or court subpoenas. A similar scam has been reported in Northampton County, where callers impersonated sheriff's department officials and asked for bank and credit card information to settle fictitious arrest warrants.
Anyone receiving such calls should contact their local police department, the Sheriff's Department, or the Berks County DA's Office. Complaints can also be filed with the FTC online or by calling 202-326-2222.

Union's Playoff Hopes Alive Despite Tough Season

The Philadelphia Union have faced a challenging 2024 MLS season, dealing with significant player losses and disappointing performances. They lost their top striker to a transfer and their center backs have struggled. Additionally, they've had fan protests, long stretches without home wins, and only one win in 17 games.
Despite these setbacks, the Union are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, just one point away from a playoff spot. In a league where nine out of 15 teams make the playoffs, the Union still have a chance.
The Union’s struggles included losing key players to international duty and injuries. However, the return of Daniel Gazdag, Jose Martinez, and Andre Blake has recently helped them secure two wins. Coach Jim Curtin emphasized the importance of having top players perform well, highlighting Blake's critical saves and Gazdag's scoring.
The Union have found new talents, like Tai Baribo, who has scored six goals in seven starts. They face a tough path to the playoffs with nine games left, including five away games and matches against strong opponents.
Phillies Manage Rotation with Wheeler and Suárez Back in Action

Zack Wheeler is set to start for the Phillies on Tuesday after a two-week break. Both Wheeler and Ranger Suárez, who also had a break, had been dealing with back spasms before the All-Star break. Wheeler, who was an All-Star, took the time to relax, while Suárez returns after allowing 15 runs in his last 15 ⅔ innings.
Manager Rob Thomson is optimistic about their return, hoping they can perform well as the Phillies lead the National League by 4.5 games and the NL East by 8.5 games.
The Phillies plan to switch to a six-man rotation in early August, coinciding with Taijuan Walker’s expected return from an injured list due to right index finger inflammation. Walker will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and live batting practice on Saturday. Thomson is hopeful about Walker’s recovery, especially his splitter, which has shown improvement.
