Pottstown Pharmacy Settles $150K for Improper Drug Dispensing

A Pottstown pharmacy has paid a $150,000 settlement for improperly dispensing opioids and other controlled substances, and submitting false claims to Medicare and Medicaid. Announced by U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero, the settlement involved Professional Pharmacy & Convalescent Products, Ltd., which also surrendered its DEA registration.

The pharmacy, located on North Charlotte Street, was accused of violating the Controlled Substances Act by dispensing drugs like oxycodone without proper prescriptions from June 2018 to March 2024. This settlement resolves these violations and liabilities under the False Claims Act.

DEA and HHS officials emphasized the importance of pharmacies adhering to legal obligations to protect communities from the opioid epidemic. The investigation and settlement were handled by the DEA’s Philadelphia Field Division and the HHS Office of the Inspector General.

Berks Graduate and Cancer Survivor Luke Holman Drafted by Reds

Luke Holman, a Wilson High School graduate and cancer survivor, was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds with the 71st pick in the MLB Draft. Holman, who overcame anaplastic large cell lymphoma as a child, has shown remarkable perseverance and skill throughout his baseball career.

Diagnosed at age seven, Holman underwent a year of chemotherapy at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Despite his health struggles, he returned to sports and excelled, ultimately becoming the 2019 Berks Baseball Player of the Year.

Holman’s college career includes standout performances at LSU, where he transferred after two years at Alabama. In 2024, he posted a 2.75 ERA over 91.2 innings, with 127 strikeouts and an overall record of 9-4. His determination was evident in critical games, such as striking out three batters with bases loaded against Texas A&M.

Holman's journey from a cancer survivor to a professional athlete has been inspirational. He hopes to motivate others battling similar challenges, much like former pitcher Jon Lester inspired him.

Historic Night for Union: Baribo's Hat Trick and Youngest MLS Player Debut

After days of oppressive heat, the Union secured a decisive 5-1 victory over New England on a rainy Wednesday night in Chester. This win broke their ten-game winless streak and provided a much-needed morale boost.

Tai Baribo was the star, scoring a hat trick. The Union's offensive surge began in the first half, with Baribo netting the opener in the 29th minute. Kai Wagner assisted three goals, including a header by Jakob Glesnes. Baribo's second goal came just before halftime from a counterattack, and he completed his hat trick early in the second half.

The night also saw the debut of 14-year-old Cavan Sullivan, who became the youngest player in MLS and American major pro sports history. Entering at the restart, Sullivan received enthusiastic support and managed a shot on target in stoppage time.

Despite a lapse in the 50th minute allowing Ian Harkes to score, the Union's defense held firm with Andre Blake returning from injury. Quinn Sullivan also made his mark, scoring a stunning goal from outside the box in the 84th minute.

This victory lifts the Union’s spirits and offers hope for the remainder of the season as they strive to improve their standings.
