Union’s Defensive Struggles Ease with Key Players Back in Training

The Philadelphia Union have seen a slight relief in their injury woes as key players Jesus Bueno and Mikael Uhre returned to training ahead of Saturday’s match against Toronto. Additionally, goalkeeper Andre Blake has resumed training for the first time since undergoing knee surgery in late May, though his status for the upcoming game remains uncertain.
The team faces a crucial period with three matches next week before the Leagues Cup break. Currently sitting in 14th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 4-9-9 and 21 points, the Union are in desperate need of victories.
Uhre, who has been sidelined for the past five games due to a groin injury, is second on the team with six goals and is expected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming matches. Bueno, who suffered an ankle injury in Chicago, has fully recovered after an MRI showed no structural damage and is back in full training.
Blake’s participation remains uncertain as he is still being evaluated post-meniscus surgery. He has played only four matches this season, struggling with a quad injury and a concussion. The Union have faced defensive challenges in his absence, conceding 18 goals in six games before 18-year-old Andrew Rick’s clean sheet against the Red Bulls.
The Union’s head coach, Jim Curtin, emphasized the importance of Blake’s presence on the field. "We’re at our best when Andre is back," Curtin stated. However, Curtin also acknowledged Rick’s valuable contributions as the backup goalkeeper.
The Union hope to capitalize on their returning players’ strengths to gain crucial points in the upcoming matches, starting with the encounter against Toronto, who are also struggling with a 7-11-3 record and 24 points.
Philadelphia Native Kyle Lowry Rejoins 76ers for 2024-25 Season

Kyle Lowry has signed a one-year deal to return to the Philadelphia 76ers, aiming to contribute to a revamped team featuring new additions like Paul George and the return of All-Stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Lowry, who played for the 76ers last season, brings experience and leadership to a team with high aspirations for the upcoming season.
In his 23 regular-season games last season, Lowry averaged 8.0 points, 4.6 assists, and shot 40.4% from three-point range, starting in 20 of those games. He also started all six playoff games in the series against the Knicks.
