High E-coli Levels Force Closure of Blue Marsh Lake Swim Beach

NO SWIMMING sign

Swimming at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area of Blue Marsh Lake is currently off-limits due to elevated levels of E-coli bacteria. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced on Monday that recent water samples taken over the weekend showed high bacterial counts.

This marks the second closure in recent weeks; the swim area was previously shut down on June 28th and had reopened on July 2nd after similar concerns.

The swim beach will remain closed until the water is deemed safe for public use. However, this restriction only affects the designated swimming area. Other activities such as picnicking and boating are still permitted.

Visitors engaging in water activities outside the designated swim area are reminded that these waters are not tested, and swimming is at one's own risk. Further updates will be provided as conditions change.

Flyers Re-sign Defenseman Egor Zamula to Two-Year Contract

The Philadelphia Flyers have announced the re-signing of defenseman Egor Zamula to a two-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $1.7 million, according to General Manager Daniel Brière.

Zamula, 24, contributed significantly to the Flyers' defense last season, accumulating 21 points (5 goals and 16 assists) over 66 regular season games. He led the team's defensemen in power-play goals with two and ranked third among them in goals, assists, and points.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 200 pounds, Zamula has made a notable impact since his NHL debut on April 27, 2021, against New Jersey. In his career, he has recorded 25 points (5 goals and 20 assists) in 92 games, all with the Flyers. He achieved his first NHL point on October 18, 2022, against Tampa Bay, and scored his first NHL goal on October 17, 2023, against Vancouver.

Zamula, originally from Chelyabinsk, Russia, went undrafted but signed an entry-level contract with the Flyers during training camp on September 20, 2018. He later re-signed a one-year deal on May 2, 2023.

In addition to his NHL career, Zamula has also played parts of three seasons with the Flyers' AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, where he recorded 54 points (5 goals and 49 assists) in 127 games. Before turning professional, he registered 102 points (19 goals and 83 assists) in parts of four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with Calgary and Regina.

Internationally, Zamula represented Russia in the 2020 Under-20 World Junior Championship, earning five points (2 goals and 3 assists) in seven games and securing a silver medal. He was named one of the top three players on his team for the tournament. He also participated in the 2018 Under-18 World Junior Championship, recording two points (1 goal and 1 assist) in five games.

Philadelphia Aims for Championship with Major Roster Overhaul

The Philadelphia 76ers have unveiled a new lineup of veteran players, featuring the return of guard Kelly Oubre. Oubre, who played a pivotal role last season, is the sole veteran to continue with the team from the previous year. He signed a two-year, $16.3 million contract after a consistent performance of six straight seasons averaging 15 or more points.

Joining Oubre on the roster are center Andre Drummond and guard Caleb Martin. Drummond, returning for his second stint with the Sixers, signed a two-year, $10 million deal. Known for his rebounding prowess, Drummond averaged 8.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last season with the Bulls. Martin, a versatile wing player, inked a four-year, $32 million contract. He brings defensive strength and a solid three-point shooting record, having averaged 10 points in the regular season and 11.6 in the playoffs with the Heat.

The Sixers made significant financial commitments this offseason, spending approximately $450 million to secure new players, including star forward Paul George. George signed a four-year, $212 million deal, bringing his extensive playoff experience to the team. Tyrese Maxey, a standout performer last season, secured a five-year, $204 million extension after averaging 25.8 points in the regular season and 29.8 in the playoffs.

Other additions include veteran guard Eric Gordon, who joined on a one-year, $3.5 million deal, and rookies Jared McCain from Duke and Adem Bona from UCLA. The team’s roster overhaul marks a significant shift as they prepare to compete in the highly competitive Atlantic Division.

Joel Embiid has expressed his support for these acquisitions, signaling optimism for the upcoming season. The Sixers' extensive investments reflect their ambition to challenge top teams like the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks in their quest for an NBA championship.
