Teenager Faces Up to 25 Years for Pottstown Murder and Assault

A 19-year-old Philadelphia woman, Jahme Barnes, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and other charges for a shooting in Pottstown that killed Dakari Rome and injured a teenager. Barnes, who was 17 at the time, admitted to recklessly handling a firearm during an attempted robbery. She faces 12 to 25 years in prison, with sentencing to be determined by a judge. The incident involved Barnes and others in Rome's SUV, where she fired the gun, resulting in Rome's death. The case underscores the risks of illegal firearm possession among youths.

PA Bill Targets Colleges

Boycotting Israel with Funding Cuts

A new bill in Pennsylvania, supported by a bipartisan group of senators, aims to financially penalize colleges and universities that boycott Israel. The legislation would prevent state funding to institutions that engage in actions intended to financially penalize Israel or Israeli commercial activity. This measure comes in response to campus protests calling for divestment from Israel following recent conflicts. While the bill targets administrative actions, it has raised concerns about free speech and political expression among critics, including the ACLU.

Bryce Harper Powers Phillies to

8-1 Victory Over Tigers

Phillies

Bryce Harper's stellar performance propelled the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. Harper homered, doubled twice, drove in five runs, and played a pivotal role in a rare triple play. Alec Bohm also shined, collecting four hits, including a home run, and participating in the triple play. The Phillies (52-26), holding the best record in the league, jumped to a 4-0 lead before Detroit's starter Casey Mize could record an out. Mize struggled early, allowing a two-run double to Harper and a solo homer to Bohm.

Aaron Nola secured his 99th career win, yielding one run on six hits over seven innings. He also initiated the third-inning triple play, the first 1-3-5 triple play in the majors since 1929. Michael Mercado pitched a flawless eighth inning in his MLB debut.

Mize, despite striking out a career-high 10 batters, gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings. The Tigers' best scoring opportunity arose in the third inning but was quashed by the triple play. The Phillies extended their winning streak to three games, outscoring opponents 24-3 in that span.

Detroit's lone run came in the fifth inning from a Carson Kelly single, but Harper's three-run homer in the sixth and Bohm's RBI double in the eighth sealed the Tigers' fate. The teams will meet again on Tuesday, with Phillies' Ranger Suarez facing Tigers' Tarik Skubal.
