Pottstown Borough Council has approved a conditional use permit for Dwight City Group's project to transform a vacant warehouse into 85 market-rate apartments, despite a parking variance. The development, named Hanover Street Mill, aims to offer one-bedroom apartments and will include the demolition of an existing building for additional parking. This project, which requires further planning commission review before final council approval, is seen as a boost to the local economy and a revitalization of underutilized properties.

Dive into Safety: YMCA's Top Tips

for Poolside Prevention

Embrace Pool and Water Safety This Summer

As the days grow warmer, anticipation for poolside fun and relaxation builds. It's the perfect moment to focus on enhancing water safety, a priority that's been at the heart of the Y's mission for decades.

The Greater Philadelphia YMCA has proudly equipped over 17,000 children with swimming skills in the past year alone, complemented by numerous adults and children benefiting from the essential water safety knowledge imparted through our complimentary Safety Around Water program.

Key Safety Guidelines for Enjoyable Summer Days:

Prioritize Water Safety: Lifeguards at the Y stress the importance of taking water safety seriously. With drowning being a leading cause of death among young children in the U.S., the need for vigilance is clear. The risks are real, even in shallow waters, but the majority of these dangers can be mitigated through fundamental water safety education offered in our programs.

Preparation is Key: An essential part of poolside planning involves prioritizing safety. Investing in life vests, proper floatation devices, and other safety equipment can make a significant difference. Remember, the most critical tool for preventing accidents is your undivided attention. Drowning incidents can be swift and silent, making constant vigilance essential.

Ensure Visibility: Water can complicate visibility with its reflective and distorting qualities. Opting for swim gear in bright colors can help maintain clear visibility, ensuring swimmers stand out in the pool environment.

Avoid Pool Drains: The suction from pool drains poses a significant risk, particularly in older pools. Utilizing anti-entrapment drain covers and encouraging swimmers to keep a safe distance can prevent dangerous situations.

Encourage Proper Breathing: It might be tempting to engage in breath-holding competitions, but such activities can lead to light-headedness or worse. Encouraging regular, controlled breathing is crucial for safety.

Maintain a Clean Pool Area: Clutter around the pool area not only detracts from the enjoyment but also increases the risk of accidents. Keeping the pool and its surroundings clean is imperative for a safe swimming environment.

Swimming Instruction: A Step Towards a Safer Summer

Beyond the immediate joy it brings, swimming is a life skill with far-reaching benefits, from physical fitness to mental well-being and community building. The Y's swimming instruction programs are designed for individuals at any life stage, from toddlers to seniors, emphasizing the joy and safety of water activities. Our programs, including the no-cost Safety Around Water course, are open to the public and aim to make swimming a safe and enjoyable part of everyone's lives.
