Delaware Valley Science Fair: Fostering Tomorrow's Innovators Today

The Delaware Valley Science Fairs (DVSF) stand as a beacon of innovation and academic pursuit, challenging the traditional confines of science fair projects. Spanning across Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, and Delaware, this prestigious event draws in 900 to 1,000 eager students from grades 6th through 12th each year. Far from the simple science projects of popular imagination, participants engage in sophisticated research, delving deep into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines across 13 distinct categories, alongside Team Projects and a special segment for Consumer Science aimed at 6th to 8th graders.
The impact of participating in the DVSF is monumental. It offers a unique platform for young minds to make discoveries that could very well alter the course of their lives. Beyond the intellectual challenge and personal growth, there are tangible rewards at stake—scholarship and prize money for the winners, creating a highly competitive atmosphere. For the high school champions, the journey extends to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May, where they compete for a share of over $4 million in scholarships and awards. Middle school victors advance to the Thermo Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge, a national competition fostering the next generation of STEM leaders.
Since its inception in 1949, DVSF has been propelled by the support of local companies, foundations, universities, and individual donors, making it one of the oldest and most significant fairs of its kind in the United States. The guiding principle behind DVSF is a profound yet simple truth: students learn science by doing science. This hands-on approach not only hones their scientific acumen but also equips them with critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for their future academic and professional endeavors.
The mission of DVSF transcends the boundaries of a traditional science fair. It aims to forge a collaborative network among parents, teachers, and industry experts, all working in tandem to inspire and nurture young talents. Through this collective effort, DVSF aims to contribute to the community by cultivating a skilled scientific workforce ready to face the challenges of the future. The fair also emphasizes the importance of mentoring and teacher training to ensure broad and effective participation. Proudly affiliated with the Regeneron ISEF, the Delaware Valley Science Fairs continue to inspire a legacy of scientific inquiry and excellence among the youth of today, preparing them to become the innovators and problem solvers of tomorrow.
