MCCC hosts 10th Annual Tri-County
High School Art Exhibition
Opening reception is Tuesday, Feb. 13, 5-7 p.m.

Come and enjoy an incredible display of creativity as budding artists from 20 area high schools in Montgomery, Berks and Chester counties share their talents at Montgomery County Community College’s 10th Annual Tri-County High School Art Exhibition and Competition in the College’s North Hall Art Gallery of the Montco Cultural Center, 16 East High Street, Pottstown.
The exhibition features an impressive array of 180 artworks in a variety of media, including oils, watercolors, ceramics, prints, sculpture and more. The exhibit opens Tuesday, Feb. 13, with an artists’ reception and awards ceremony from 5 to 7 p.m. (awards begin at 6 p.m.). Both the reception and exhibit are free and open to the community. Convenient parking is available along High Street and in the College’s parking lot at 101 College Drive.
"The exhibit is a glimpse of the remarkable projects that area art teachers are orchestrating with their students,” said Patrick Rodgers, MCCC Galleries Director. “Now in its 10th year, this exhibition has grown from a handful of schools to a dozen in 2018 to the 20 schools participating in this year’s show. The current exhibit features the work of more than 150 talented high school students from as far apart as Haverford and Reading. I am always in awe of the dedication of the art teachers involved in this show as well as the imagination of their students, and I’m so glad we can celebrate all of that together in Pottstown.”
This year’s juror is Rebecca Carpenter, a fine art photographer who taught art at the elementary and high school levels for 16 years. Her current work uses models and abandoned structures in Pennsylvania and elsewhere to create evocative and texturally rich photographs.
Carpenter selected a number of pieces for special recognition, including:
Untitled drypoint etching, Hannah Woods, Upper Merion Area High School

Pottstown NAACP Launches 'Road to Reading' Initiative for Local Youth

An anonymous benefactor has pledged a substantial gift to the children of Pottstown, aiming to foster literacy and enhance reading skills among the youth aged 0 to 8, especially targeting underserved communities and children of color. The Pottstown NAACP has been entrusted with the execution of this generous initiative, aptly named "Road to Reading."
The Mission: The objective is straightforward – the aim is to provide books directly to children, enabling them to build personal libraries at home. Unlike traditional lending libraries, the focus is on ownership and accessibility. In curating the selection, we prioritize diversity, offering books that reflect varied cultures and experiences, and we're open to including titles in Spanish and other languages to accommodate the diverse needs of our community.
Execution Strategy: In partnership with the Literacy Council of Norristown, the plan is to procure books and distribute them across various platforms, including literacy groups, community organizations, businesses, churches, and at local events. The goal is to leverage every possible avenue to ensure these books reach the hands of children, enriching their lives with the joy of reading.
Engagement Opportunities for Organizations: Collaboration is sought with entities willing to house a bookshelf filled with children's books. The ideal scenario involves the host providing the shelf and a volunteer overseeing the collection, including feedback on popular titles and replenishment needs. However, the NAACP of Pottstown is prepared to supply both the bookshelf and a monitor if necessary. Organizations interested in featuring books at specific events are also encouraged to reach out for support with give-away tables.
Volunteer Roles for Individuals: There are several ways individuals can contribute to this initiative:
Participating in the selection of books to purchase.
Assisting with sorting and labeling books upon arrival.
Manning book give-away stations at community events.
Monitoring community bookshelves, providing updates on stock levels, and preferences to tailor our future selections more effectively.
Join The Effort: If you're inspired to be a part of the "Road to Reading" initiative, whether by contributing your time or hosting a bookshelf, please contact Sandy or Bob Bauers at 610-327-1213. Together, we can make a significant impact on the literacy journey of Pottstown's children.

Leroy Brahm, a 33-year-old man from Spring City, has been convicted of first-degree murder for the brutal beating death of his girlfriend, Annabel Meenan, in 2021. The conviction ensures Brahm will face a mandatory life sentence. The case, described by the District Attorney as involving "hours of unimaginable and relentless abuse," was supported by evidence from home security footage, text messages, and witness testimony. The attack occurred after the couple returned from a night out, leaving behind a scene of violence in their home.
