Pottstown Man Charged in Fatal Crash Killing Two Passengers

Khaliym Smith

In a tragic incident, Khaliym Smith, a 22-year-old man from Pottstown, Montgomery County, has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that resulted in the death of two of his passengers. The crash occurred on February 12 at Route 422 and South Collegeville Road in Upper Providence Township. Smith is facing two counts of homicide by vehicle and charges related to driving under the influence, among others.

Authorities allege that Smith was under the influence of marijuana while driving a Jeep at a speed of 81 mph in a 55 mph zone. The vehicle reportedly lost control, went off the road, and underwent a series of violent maneuvers. It went through grass near the off-ramp, spun, rolled, slid on its roof, and finally collided with a concrete barrier. During these events, the Jeep rolled multiple times, ejecting Smith and the passengers from the vehicle.

The crash tragically claimed the lives of Maya Garner, 22, and Givonah "Gigi" Mitchell, 23, both residents of Philadelphia. Smith, his sister, and another male passenger were found conscious but critically injured.

Investigators at the crash site discovered a loaded "ghost gun" with an extended magazine and a backpack containing marijuana. The investigation further revealed that there was no evidence of Smith applying the brakes either before or during the crash.

Smith turned himself in to the police last week. He has been released on $100,000 unsecured bail with the condition that he must not drive.

Phillies Balancing Act: Wheeler Priority, Others in Extension Talks

Phillies

As the Philadelphia Phillies gear up for another season, their focus isn't just on the field but also on securing the future of their key players. While the team is keen on extending ace Zack Wheeler's contract, they are also considering long-term deals for other valuable players.

Last season, talks of extending Aaron Nola's contract were prominent, but it didn't materialize until the offseason. Meanwhile, the Phillies successfully extended Seranthony Domínguez and José Alvarado, with Alvarado's three-year, $22 million deal being particularly significant. This move, including a 2026 club option, prevented Alvarado from hitting free agency and helped the Phillies retain their top reliever.

Attention is now turning to Wheeler as the new season approaches, but there are four other Phillies players who could be strong extension candidates:

Brandon Marsh: Marsh showcased impressive skills in 2023, nearly making the top list in National League hitters for on-base percentage. As he approaches arbitration, the Phillies see him as a key part of their future and might consider an extension.

Matt Strahm: Signed to a two-year, $15 million deal, Strahm has become a valuable "swingman" for the team. His versatility and postseason performance make him a prime candidate for an extension, despite concerns over his knee injury history.

Ranger Suárez: Despite a challenging 2023 season with injuries, Suárez's potential in the postseason could make him a priority for an extension. His free agency is two seasons away, and a strong performance could lead to a significant payday.

Jeff Hoffman: After a successful season with a 2.41 ERA across 54 games, Hoffman has proven to be a reliable bullpen option. The Phillies might look to secure him with an extension before Opening Day, recognizing his valuable pitching arsenal.

However, extending Bryson Stott may be unlikely due to his representation by Scott Boras, known for steering clients towards free agency to establish their market value. Stott, a key position player, is under team control through 2027, while fellow Boras client Alec Bohm is set to become a free agent after 2026.
