Penn State Berks Professor Influences Global Hypertension Guidelines
Praveen Veerabhadrappa, an associate professor of kinesiology at Penn State Berks, is making significant contributions to global health with his research on hypertension. As part of an international panel of experts, he has co-authored a position paper on lifestyle management for hypertension prevention, which has been endorsed by major health organizations and gained international media attention.
The research emphasizes a holistic approach to preventing high blood pressure, including both traditional and innovative strategies. These include isometric resistance exercise, stress reduction techniques like meditation and yoga, and lifestyle changes such as healthy eating and quality sleep. Veerabhadrappa's personal motivation stems from his family's history with hypertension, driving his dedication to health guidelines that could have a worldwide impact.
At Penn State Berks, Veerabhadrappa, known as "Dr. V." by students, leads undergraduate research projects in the cardiovascular exercise physiology lab. His current work involves using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to study the effects of sedentary behavior on cardiovascular health, employing wearable technology to track activity and sleep patterns.
Veerabhadrappa's students, many of whom have received Erickson Discovery Grants, actively participate in research that has been recognized at professional conferences and in publications. His commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientific leaders is matched by his international recognition as a Fellow of the International Society of Hypertension and a founding member of its New Investigator Network.

Reading Community Commemorates 85th Anniversary of Kristallnacht
The Reading community came together to observe the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of Broken Glass, which is recognized as the event that initiated the Holocaust. The Jewish Federation of Reading, in collaboration with Christ Episcopal Church, organized a community prayer service and a circle of light peace vigil, where attendees held candles in remembrance.
The remembrance event took place against the backdrop of recent tensions in the Middle East, including an attack by Hamas on Israel. The vigil served as a poignant reminder of the past atrocities and the enduring need for peace and kindness in the present day.
2024 Borough Property Tax Increase Reduced by Nearly 40%
The proposed 2024 borough property tax hike has been significantly reduced from 4.93% to 2.96%, decreasing the tax increase for a $100,000 home from $70 to $42.38. This change was presented in the latest $66.5 million budget draft. If approved, the budget could still decrease before final adoption in December, but will not increase. The revised budget maintains essential programs and includes a $38,000 funding boost for the Pottstown Regional Public Library, the first in many years.

Philadelphia Union Advances to Eastern Conference Semifinal vs FC Cincinnati

Philadelphia Union has successfully advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinal for the third consecutive year after defeating New England Revolution 1-0. They are now set to face FC Cincinnati, the Supporters' Shield winners, in a crucial match scheduled for either November 25th or 26th, with the exact kick-off time yet to be announced.
In their 2023 encounters, the Union and Cincinnati have faced each other twice. The first match saw Cincinnati emerge victorious with a 1-0 win, although Philadelphia was not at full strength as they were preparing for the Concacaf Champions League Quarterfinal. Despite fielding a rotated squad, Philadelphia displayed resilience but ultimately conceded a late penalty kick goal. In their second meeting, Philadelphia initially led with two first-half goals from Jose Martinez and Daniel Gazdag. However, Cincinnati made a strong comeback in the second half, with Aaron Boupendza and Brandon Vazquez scoring to level the match.
The upcoming semifinal promises to be a highly competitive encounter between these two teams.
