Police Increase DUI Patrols for Halloween in Berks County

Law enforcement across Berks County will conduct roving and sobriety checkpoints over Halloween weekend to catch impaired drivers. With celebrations ramping up around Tuesday's holiday, officials are urging people to plan safe transportation if consuming drugs or alcohol.

Police advise that any substance use can impair driving ability, even if obtained legally. Marijuana in particular can slow reaction time and cognitive function. Getting behind the wheel while impaired puts everyone on the road in danger.

Ride sharing or designating a sober driver are recommended. The consequences of a DUI arrest can be severe, potentially costing up to $10,000 in fines and jail time.

By announcing increased patrols and checkpoints in advance, police aim to deter impaired driving and keep Berks roads safer through the Halloween festivities. Their message is simple: If you feel different, you drive different. Don't take risks by driving impaired.

Norristown Couple Charged After Child Dies of Fentanyl Overdose

A Norristown couple is facing manslaughter charges after the woman's 6-year-old son died of a fentanyl overdose in July.

Kristen Forrest Sabatino, 31, and Matthew Shane Santiago, 35, were arrested this week in connection with the death of 6-year-old Dominic Lyons.

Police responded to the couple's Willow Street home in July and found the child unresponsive. Autopsy results showed Dominic had toxic levels of fentanyl and the animal sedative xylazine in his system.

Investigators say both Sabatino and Santiago had a history of drug use and purchased illegal drugs prior to Dominic's death, which was ruled a homicide.

The couple is accused of recklessly endangering Dominic and their 2-year-old daughter. Involuntary manslaughter of a child under 12 carries a possible 5-10 year prison sentence.

Santiago remains jailed on $1 million bail. Sabatino was arrested in Lancaster and will be arraigned on the charges. Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for early November.

Inflation Makes Halloween Candy Pricier

Halloween candy prices have risen nearly 8% over the past year, outpacing overall grocery inflation. Several factors are causing the price hikes, including high sugar costs and limited domestic sugar supplies.

A survey found 41% of Halloween celebrants say inflation has impacted their candy spending. However, some candy prices are falling based on Amazon data.

Hot Tamales, Mounds bars, Heath bars, Rolo candies, and Milk Duds saw some of the biggest Amazon price decreases over 12 months. Shoppers should avoid Airheads, Baby Ruth, candy corn, PayDay, and Tootsie Rolls, which had the largest price increases.

Consumers can save on Halloween by avoiding favorite candies less likely to be left for trick-or-treaters, making homemade costumes, and trading decor with others. With pricier holidays approaching, cutting Halloween costs is advised. Still, some sweet treats can be enjoyed without breaking the budget.

Second Suspect Arrested in Kidnapping, Execution-Style
Murder of Reading Man

Vashon A. Winfield, 19, was arrested and jailed without bail for the March 2022 kidnapping and murder of 19-year-old Javien Perch in Reading, PA. Perch's body was found shot 10 times in a wooded area in April.

In August, police charged Winfield and two other suspects, Hector L. Torres and Ansari Jalal, with murder, robbery, and kidnapping. Torres was already jailed on other charges. Jalal remains at large.

Investigators used the victim's cellphone data, license plate readers, and a witness account to identify the suspects. The witness said the victim was forced into their car and later shot by the three suspects.

The motive is believed to be previous negative interactions between Perch and his killers. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the remaining suspect Ansari Jalal is urged to contact Reading police.

With Winfield now in custody, two of the three suspects have been arrested for the brutal slaying execution of the Reading teenager months ago. Police continue to pursue the third suspect.

Union Set for Intense Best-of-3 Playoff Series Against New England

Jim Curtin and the fourth-seeded Union are gearing up for the MLS Cup playoffs, starting with a best-of-3 series against No. 5 New England. The first match is at home on Saturday evening, with a potential third game also at Subaru Park.

This year's playoffs reintroduce a format not used since 2002, with the first round being a best-of-3 series. The Union, last year's Eastern Conference champions, are relying on their experience in knockout soccer to navigate this format.

Despite some injury concerns, the team is mostly healthy and ready for the challenge. The Union have a strong home record, which they hope will give them an edge in the upcoming games.
