Greater Reading Chamber Alliance Celebrates Local Growth with Building Berks Awards, Honoring 19 Key Construction Projects
The Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) honored 19 construction projects in Berks County at its fourth Building Berks Awards & Expo, attended by over 145 people. The biennial event, established in 2018, celebrates construction projects that contribute to economic growth and development in the Greater Reading area. This year, 30 projects were nominated, showcasing a variety of new constructions, renovations, and innovative initiatives.
The 2023 Building Berks Awards recognized projects in categories like commercial offices, renovations, historic preservation, agribusiness, healthcare, mixed-use, residential, education, placemaking, hospitality, industrial, infrastructure, sustainable development, and out-of-the-box concepts. These projects collectively represent $148 million in investment, 1.2 million square feet of development, and the creation of 2,100 jobs.
Since 2018, nominated projects have amounted to $849 million in investment, 7.8 million square feet of development, and 11,325 jobs created. A panel of judges evaluated the projects based on economic impact, innovation, creativity, and community impact. Nominations for the awards were open from July 10 to August 11, with eligibility requiring project completion by July 31.
Chester County Seeks Public Input
on Allocation of $19.7 Million
Opioid Settlement Funds
Apple Inc. has announced price hikes for its AppleTV+, Arcade gaming, and bundled Apple One services. The new prices are as follows:
Arcade: $6.99 (previously $4.99)
AppleTV+: $9.99 (previously $6.99)
Apple One (Individual Plan): $19.95 (previously $16.95)
Apple One (Family Plan): $25.95 (previously $22.95)
The Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services is seeking public input on how to allocate $19.7 million in opioid settlement funds. These funds, part of a larger $1 billion settlement for Pennsylvania, are aimed at addressing the opioid and overdose crisis in Chester County.
The department, in partnership with Capacity for Change, LLC, has launched a brief, confidential survey open until Nov. 30, seeking feedback from residents and workers in the county, particularly those affected by opioids.
The funds will be used to enhance and expand services related to opioid use, misuse, and overdose, with public feedback guiding the prioritization of the department's long-term plan.
Owen J. Roberts High School Celebrates Ten Seniors as Commended Students in National Merit Scholarship Program
Ten seniors from Owen J. Roberts (OJR) High School have been recognized as Commended Students in the 69th National Merit Scholarship Program. These students are among the top five percent of over 1.3 million participants from around 21,000 high schools.
The commended students from OJR High School have diverse interests and aspirations:
1. Hamsa Bandi aims to study political science in the northeast.
2. Aidan Bonner aspires to be an independent video game designer, considering several universities.
3. Grace Dales plans to pursue biomedical engineering, with several universities in mind.
4. Veer Kakari, interested in physics and genetics, intends to study computer science.
5. Vedika Nair is set to follow a path in mathematics.
6. Aman Pothakamury, a swim team member and DECA champion, looks towards chemical engineering or computer science.
7. Olivia Savochka, captain of the Girls Varsity Golf team, is focused on biology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering, with medical school as her goal.
8. Brian Serfass, part of the OJR High School DECA team, is considering Duke University or the University of Pennsylvania.
9. Saikousil Tirumalasetty, with a keen interest in chemistry, is passionate about studying computer science.

Kevin Byard Joins Eagles: Hometown Hero Reunites with Old Teammates
In a move that's all about connections, the Eagles have traded for veteran safety Kevin Byard, bringing him back to his hometown and reuniting him with former teammates like A.J. Brown, Julio Jones, and Marcus Mariota. Byard, who's had a whirlwind 48 hours, expressed his excitement about returning to Philly, a place filled with personal memories and family ties. He reminisced about growing up watching Eagles legends and is eager to play in front of Philly fans.
While Byard's role in the defense isn't defined yet, he's ready to learn the playbook, bond with teammates, and contribute to the team's winning culture. He feels he still has plenty of gas left in the tank in his eighth season and is looking forward to bringing his versatility and experience to the Eagles' secondary, alongside veterans like Darius Slay and James Bradberry.
An interesting twist is Byard's connection with Reed Blankenship, a fellow Middle Tennessee State alum. They trained together in Nashville and are good friends. Byard is excited to join Blankenship in the secondary and looks forward to leaning on him while getting up to speed with the playbook.
Boyertown Stuns Perkiomen Valley in District 1 Class 4A Playoffs,
Advances to Quarterfinals
In a surprising turn of events, Boyertown defeated Perkiomen Valley 2-1 in the second round of the District 1 Class 4A playoffs, despite previously losing twice to them.
Boyertown's senior forward Jayden Anderson scored both goals, overturning an early lead by Perkiomen Valley. This victory propels Boyertown into the District 1 quarterfinals against West Chester Rustin.
The win marks a significant turnaround for Boyertown, who had missed the Pioneer Athletic Conference playoffs but are now the last PAC boys soccer team in the competition. Perkiomen Valley's season ends on a disappointing note, especially after a strong start to the season.
