Lower Pottsgrove Awarded $310K
Grant for Bridge Rehab
Lower Pottsgrove Township received over $310,000 in grant funding from Montgomery County's annual Transportation Program. The funds will go towards rehabilitating the North Adams Street bridge over Sprogels Run.
The work will include replacing the bridge's superstructure, sealing the abutments, and installing new beams, decking, and bridge slab. This project was one of three grants awarded in 2023, totaling over $1 million for transportation improvements across the county.
Lower Pottsgrove's bridge grant will allow critical repairs to aging infrastructure. The county program uses funds from a $5 vehicle registration fee to support local transportation projects. This latest grant continues Montgomery County's commitment to invest in roads, bridges, lighting, sidewalks, and more.
The North Adams Street bridge rehab underscores Lower Pottsgrove's focus on upgrading key transportation needs. Residents will benefit from improved safety and connectivity once the project is completed.
Montco Commissioners Address
Israel-Hamas Conflict
Norristown, PA - At a recent meeting, Montgomery County Commissioners commented on the ongoing violent conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Commission Chair Kenneth Lawrence affirmed Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas rocket attacks. However, he also prayed for innocent Palestinian civilians caught in the crossfire.
Vice Chair Jamila Winder condemned Hamas terrorism but lamented the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Both commissioners recognized the conflict's local impact on Jewish and Palestinian county residents worried for loved ones overseas.
Additionally, Lawrence and Winder denounced rising antisemitism and Islamophobia, calling out hate locally and nationwide.
They urged understanding, not rash judgements, regarding the complex Israel-Hamas crisis. The officials acknowledged no easy answers but stressed listening to all perspectives.
Job Fair Monday for Formerly Incarcerated in Reading
A job fair will be held in Reading on Monday, October 24 for those previously incarcerated or with criminal records.
The fair runs from 11am to 2pm at the WCR Center for the Arts. Numerous employers open to second chances will attend. Lunch and drinks will be provided free.
The event is organized by Building Justice in Berks. At noon they will hold a press conference on their "Walk With Us" partnership. It is a listening tour to gather input before building a new county prison.
The goal is to understand drivers of incarceration in Berks County. Then work to improve public safety and permanently lower the jail population.
TheRealDeal610, a group supporting citizens post-incarceration, is also partnering.

Accused Schuylkill River Trail Shooter Seeks New Lawyer Ahead of December Trial
Marquise Alexander Johnson, accused in the shooting death of Daquan Kennard Tucker on the Schuylkill River Trail, decided to part ways with his defense lawyer, Michael Anthony Walker, two months before his trial. Johnson expressed intentions to hire a new lawyer but has until October 27 to inform the court of his decision. If he doesn't, Judge William R. Carpenter may appoint one for him. The trial is scheduled for December 18.
Johnson and Cody Kavon Reed are charged with multiple counts, including first-, second-, and third-degree murder, in connection to Tucker's death during an alleged robbery on March 2, 2023. Both have pleaded not guilty and are currently held without bail. A conviction could lead to life imprisonment or a sentence of 20 to 40 years.
The investigation began when Tucker's body was found by a cyclist near the Schuylkill River Trail. He had multiple gunshot wounds. Surveillance footage and witness accounts placed Tucker with Reed and Johnson on the night of his death. Motive may be linked to a previous incident where a friend of Tucker's allegedly robbed Reed. Both Reed and Johnson have prior criminal histories, with Reed having a more extensive record.
Pottstown Man Pleads Not Guilty
in Fatal Shooting
Kevin Maurice Morgan of Pottstown pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the June 27th shooting death of Derek Mayo. The fatal shooting occurred during a child custody exchange with Mayo's girlfriend at Morgan's home.
An argument escalated and Morgan allegedly shot an unarmed Mayo. Police found 6 legally owned guns in Morgan's residence. He claimed self-defense.
Prosecutors won't seek the death penalty. If convicted, Morgan faces life imprisonment or up to 40 years for third-degree murder.
Morgan remains jailed without bail as he awaits trial in the Pottstown shooting case.
