Three-Time PIAA Champion Coach Rick Perez Resigns from Reading High

Rick Perez, the coach who led Reading High to three PIAA Class 6A boys basketball championships, has officially stepped down from his position as the Red Knights' head coach.

His resignation was made public through a video shared on his Instagram account and a letter addressed to the Reading High Squires Club, a charitable organization that backs Reading High basketball. The letter was also posted on the club's Facebook page.

Despite inquiries for comment, Perez has not responded to messages seeking clarification on his decision to resign.

Wyomissing Synagogue Receives Bomb Threat, Police Investigating

A bomb threat was made against a local synagogue, Reform Congregation Oheb Shalom, in Wyomissing.

Police, including the Reading bomb squad and bomb-detecting K9 units, searched the building but found no evidence of a bomb.

The Wyomissing Police are still investigating, and anyone with information can contact them at 610-375-6102 or Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.

Apple and AAA Partner to Provide Roadside Assistance via Satellite for iPhone Users

Apple and AAA have teamed up to offer roadside assistance for iPhone 14 and later models when users have no cellular coverage. To activate this feature, users need to compose a message in Messages, type "Roadside" in the contact field, and select the Roadside Assistance via satellite option. It only works when there's no Wi-Fi or cellular network available. Users can then specify the type of car trouble they're experiencing.

Emergency SOS via satellite also works as a backup if calling 911 doesn't connect. This feature is available on supported iPhones in the United States and for travelers visiting the country.

Satellite connectivity is free for two years on iPhone 14 and iPhone 15, but pricing beyond that hasn't been announced. Roadside assistance will require payment to AAA, with pricing details provided before help is dispatched. T-Mobile customers on certain plans may get a year of free AAA membership.

New Jersey Man Sentenced to Prison for Stealing Handgun and Falsifying Identification at PA Gun Show

Christopher M. Hart, a New Jersey man, has been sentenced to 4 to 8 years in prison for stealing a handgun from a gun show in Upper Providence Township, Pennsylvania, and using false identification to buy another firearm.

He was caught with the stolen handgun valued at $579.99 and had a previous drug conviction that prohibited him from possessing firearms. Hart used a Philadelphia man's identity to fraudulently purchase the second handgun, signing false information on purchase forms.

Other charges against Hart were dropped as part of a plea agreement. He will enter prison on November 1 and may be eligible for a drug treatment program.

Philadelphia Man Pleads Guilty to Hit-and-Run Rampage Resulting in Death and Injuries

Philadelphia man Kareem Maurice Welton has pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run "rampage" that resulted in the death of a female chef and serious injuries to a jogger.

The incidents occurred in 2021 and spanned from Philadelphia to Montgomery County. Welton faces charges of third-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and robbery of a motor vehicle.

He could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 to 40 years in prison for each of the serious charges. Sentencing is pending, and the judge has discretion in determining the punishment. The crime spree involved stolen vehicles, thefts, and deliberate harm to innocent victims.
