Starting October 16, the Owen J. Roberts School District in Montgomery County will implement a new school bus safety program in collaboration with local law enforcement and BusPatrol.

The initiative involves equipping the entire fleet of school buses with automated enforcement technology to identify and record license plates of vehicles that do not stop when the bus's stop sign is engaged and red lights are flashing.

In instances of violations, video evidence is reviewed by local law enforcement, and citations are issued via mail. The program aims to enhance the safety of over 6,000 transported children by mitigating risks posed by vehicles disregarding traffic laws related to school buses.

Violators face a penalty of $300 for first-time offenses.

Split Verdict in Lincoln University Stabbing Trial: Nydira Smith Acquitted of Murder, Convicted on Manslaughter and Assault Charges

Nydira Smith was involved in a violent altercation at Lincoln University, where she stabbed three men, one fatally, during a dormitory brawl. After a lengthy trial and over nine hours of deliberation, the jury acquitted Smith of first and third-degree murder charges but found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault.

The manslaughter charge implies reckless or grossly negligent action without intent to kill, while the assault charges indicate intentional and unlawful infliction of serious bodily injury.

Smith, who claimed to have acted in self-defense and to protect her brother during the brawl, was also found guilty of several other charges, including simple assault and possession of an instrument of crime. The defense and Smith expressed satisfaction over the avoidance of murder charges, while sentencing for the convictions is pending. The prosecution argued that Smith's use of a knife was unjustified and intentional. The incident has roots in a campus fight, and Smith's actions post-incident, such as seeking legal counsel and altering her living and working conditions, were noted during the trial.

Castellanos' Historic Homers Propel Phillies to NLCS, Braves Eliminated

Nick Castellanos made MLB history by becoming the first player to hit multiple home runs in consecutive postseason games, steering the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game 4 of the NL Division Series.

This win eliminates the Braves, despite their impressive 104-win season, from the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The Phillies now advance to the all-wild card NL Championship Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with Game 1 scheduled for Monday in Philadelphia.

The Phillies navigated through scares and showcased strategic gameplay, while the Braves, despite a strong regular season, once again face postseason disappointment. Castellanos, who experienced a production dip in the second half of the season, has notably rebounded during the postseason, with his son cheering from the front row.
