Pottstown Borough Grapples with Proposed 4.93% Tax Hike Amid Budget Deficits and Pending Hospital Tax Status

The first draft of the 2024 budget for Pottstown Borough proposes a 4.93% tax hike, increasing the average property tax bill by about $70, aimed at balancing a deficit of $504,259 across various funds.

Major budget drivers include salaries, insurance, and future capital needs saving plans. A notable deficit in the trash fund will likely necessitate a 10% fee hike. The budget also addresses expenses like police vehicle purchases and a sidewalk repair program.

The nonprofit status of Pottstown Hospital, currently under legal review, could significantly impact the borough's total property assessment and is a key factor in future budget considerations. Borough Manager Justin Keller anticipates possible adjustments to the proposed tax hike as more cost estimates become available.

R.M. Palmer Co. Held Responsible for Fatal Explosion by OSHA, Faces Penalties

The Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has attributed the responsibility for the March 24 explosion at R.M. Palmer Co., a chocolate plant in West Reading, which resulted in seven fatalities, to the company itself.

Despite employees reporting a gas smell, the plant was not evacuated prior to the blast. OSHA has issued two citations against the company, with penalties amounting to nearly $44,500, for failure to evacuate the plant and various other safety and recordkeeping violations. Company officials have not provided immediate comments on the findings and citations.

Philadelphia Man Sentenced to Up to 6 Years Following High-Speed Chase, Drug and Gun Charges

Christopher Adams, a 26-year-old Philadelphia man, has been sentenced to 3-6 years in prison followed by five years of probation, totaling 11 years under court supervision, after pleading guilty to several charges, including drug possession, firearm possession, aggravated assault by vehicle, and fleeing police.

The charges stem from a March 2023 incident where Adams led police on a high-speed chase from Pottstown to Norristown, which ended in a crash injuring another driver.

A subsequent investigation yielded a firearm and substantial amounts of suspected crack cocaine, heroin/fentanyl, and marijuana. Adams is eligible for a military-style disciplinary program during his incarceration.
