Fatal Collision in Union Township Claims Two Lives; Deceased Identified and Investigation Ongoing

Authorities in Berks County identified the victims of a fatal collision between a motorcyclist and a vehicle driver that occurred the previous afternoon at the intersection of Black Matt Road and West Schuylkill Road in Union Township.

The accident, which took place around 4:40 p.m., claimed the lives of 49-year-old Billie Jean Buckland and 29-year-old James Patrick McNeill. Both victims suffered blunt force trauma and internal injuries, and their deaths were ruled accidental.

State police are investigating the cause of the collision, which led to road closures in the area for several hours. No autopsies are planned for either victim.

Martial Arts Move Leads to Manslaughter Conviction in Berks County Court

Scott K. Wiley, 51, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated assault in Berks County Court for causing the death of Farrah Wertz, 42, during a domestic assault in 2019. Wiley used a martial arts move, specifically a taekwondo leg sweep, which resulted in a leg fracture for Wertz.

She underwent surgery but died 18 days later due to a pulmonary embolism triggered by deep vein thrombosis from the blunt force trauma. The incident, initially responded to by Boyertown police, escalated into a county-led investigation post Wertz's death, culminating in Wiley's conviction.

Sentencing is set for Oct. 26. During the assault, Wiley also attacked Wertz's 12-year-old son. The prosecution emphasized Wiley's martial arts training, arguing he was aware of the dangers his actions posed.
