Week Without Violence

Week Without Violence is part of a global movement with YWCAs across the country and around the world to end violence against women and girls.
“At YWCA, we know that not all violence is acknowledged or responded to equally and that some victims go unrecognized altogether.” That’s why, for more than 20 years, YWCA has set aside one week in October as a Week Without Violence.
You’re invited to join the YWCA Tri-County Area from October 16 – 21, as they raise awareness, elevate survivor voices, talk with policymakers, and more with a common goal: centering survivors so that together, we can end gender-based violence.
Pennsylvania Turnpike to Boost EV Accessibility with Superchargers at Every Service Plaza by 2027
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has approved a contract with Applegreen Electric to install electric vehicle charging stations at every service plaza by January 2027.
This initiative, costing nothing to the turnpike, will see a percentage of gross electricity sales going to the turnpike, with the exact percentage yet to be negotiated.
These stations will be superchargers, enabling a full charge within 30 minutes. Currently, 48 superchargers exist across six service plazas, with other plazas having slower chargers. Despite the low number of registered electric vehicles in Pennsylvania (0.4% of all registrations), this move aims to prevent congestion and long waiting times at charging stations, especially during peak travel times.
The project, supported by $2.6 million federal funds awarded to Applegreen, is part of PennDOT's broader effort to install charging stations every 50 miles on interstates, promoting electric vehicle use and creating jobs across the state.
Community Spirit Fuels Preparations for Reading Liederkranz Oktoberfest: A Celebration of Food, Beer, and Music Begins Today!
The Reading Liederkranz Oktoberfest, ranked third best in the country by USA Today, begins today.
Preparations for this year's event started right after the last one, with Annelise Paul coordinating over 520 volunteers, essential for the festival's success. New volunteers joined others in preparing 1,800 pounds of potato salad for the festival, highlighting the community's collaborative spirit.
While there are 35 volunteer openings remaining, the event is open to all starting today, promising great food, beer, music, and dancing, embodying the lively Oktoberfest tradition.

The Philadelphia Phillies secured a wild-card berth by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 in a 10-inning match, sparked by Johan Rojas' RBI single. The victory led to a massive celebration among the Phillies and over 30,000 fans present.
This win marks a significant moment for the Phillies, their first clinch of a postseason spot at Citizens Bank Park since 2011, signaling a hopeful turnaround after a decade of underperformance.

Key players like Aaron Nola and new additions like Trea Turner played crucial roles in this achievement, setting a positive tone for the upcoming postseason games, where the Phillies aim to secure the No. 1 seed in the NL wild-card series. This victory also had its light moments, like manager Rob Thomson's humorous attempt to celebrate with a bottle of champagne, only to find the cork still in.
EAGLES

The Philadelphia Eagles' Bootylicious Strategy: The Unstoppable 'Tush Push'
Once upon a Monday night, under the grandiose illumination of stadium lights, the NFL witnessed a play so unstoppable, it could only be rivaled by the force of gravity itself. When the Philadelphia Eagles find themselves a yard short, they summon the power of the “tush push,” a play that’s less about the yards and more about the yardage your rear can cover.
Picture this: Quarterback Jalen Hurts, the maestro of the midfield, lines up with a battalion of brawny behemoths behind him. As he takes the snap, the offensive line surges forward like a tidal wave of testosterone, while Hurts gets a hearty heave-ho from his hind-side helpers. It’s a sight to behold, a blend of ballet and bulldozer, and it almost always works. Even when it doesn’t, the Eagles, being the stubborn birds they are, do it again. It’s like watching a cat trying to fit into a box half its size; you know it won’t fit, but gosh, it’s going to try again anyway.
During one such spectacle against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Hurts was stopped just shy of the end zone. But did that deter our feathery friends? Nope. They went for it on fourth down, and with a push that would make a sumo wrestler blush, Hurts crossed the goal line, making the score 20-3. It was a push seen around the world, or at least around the stadium.
The “tush push” isn’t just a one-hit-wonder; it’s the Eagles’ golden goose, laying touchdowns instead of eggs. Last year, it propelled them towards the Super Bowl with a record of 37 for 41. The opponents? They loathe it with the fire of a thousand suns, mainly because they can’t beat it. The NFL’s competition committee even had a little chit-chat about banning the play, but alas, they couldn’t come up with a rule to outlaw the booty boost.
The secret sauce? A quarterback who can squat 600 pounds and an offensive line that’s more wall than men. And let’s not forget the camaraderie; on one occasion, tight end Dallas Goedert tried to lift Hurts in, saying, “I was yanking him for sure.” Now that’s what we call teamwork!
The Buccaneers, on the other hand, tried to leap over the offensive line to stop Hurts, a strategy as effective as bringing a spoon to a sword fight. “It’s one of those things where once they get their feet off the ground, it’s better for us,” Goedert quipped. Perhaps they should consider recruiting Superman for that job, though even he might find the “tush push” a tough nut to crack.
In a league where imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, other teams have tried to replicate the “tush push” magic. The Colts, Jaguars, and Bears gave it a whirl, but none could match the Eagles’ bootylicious brilliance. “Not everyone has Jason Kelce, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens...” coach Nick Sirianni remarked last week, emphasizing the unique blend of talent that makes the “tush push” the pièce de résistance of the Eagles’ playbook.
Even a fake “tush push” made an appearance in the third quarter, perhaps to give defenses a glimmer of hope before snatching it away again. The Eagles’ message is clear: You can try to stop the “tush push,” but you’ll only be left behind, quite literally. Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles summed it up best, “It’s a great play that they got. They crafted it.”
So, the next time you find yourself watching an Eagles game, keep an eye out for the “tush push.” It’s not just a play; it’s a phenomenon, a bootylicious strategy that’s shaking up the NFL, one push at a time.
Injury Challenges and Playoff Hopes: The Union Prepares for Crucial Matches Amid Player Absences

The Union faced a goalless draw against LAFC last Saturday, missing key players Jose Martinez and Jakob Glesnes. They might miss Julian Carranza as well in the upcoming match against FC Dallas due to a concussion protocol.
Manager Jim Curtin emphasized the challenge of not having a full, healthy group for many games but aims to have the team ready for the final stretch. The Union, currently tied with four teams at 49 points, aims for the second place in the East but has been slowed down by three consecutive draws.
They have a crucial game against Columbus, one of the tied teams, this Saturday. Despite injuries, Curtin is hopeful and stressed the importance of home points against Dallas. Dallas, holding the ninth playoff spot in the West, also faces fixture congestion.
The Union's injury woes continue with Glesnes facing a muscle issue and Martinez dealing with a knee bruise. If Carranza is absent, Tai Baribo is likely to replace him, who is gradually improving his game with more playtime. Curtin acknowledged the tough choices ahead but sees Carranza’s potential absence as an opportunity for either Baribo, Chris Donovan, or Quinn Sullivan to step up, emphasizing the need for all strikers to be ready when called upon.
