LOCAL CRIME

Rafiq Thompson Sentenced to Two Life Terms for Murder of Ex-Girlfriend and Unborn Child in Montgomery County
Rafiq Thompson, convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend Tamara Cornelius and their unborn child, received two consecutive life sentences plus an additional 18.5 to 37 years in prison.
Thompson shot Cornelius at an Exxon station in King of Prussia in April 2022. While the jury quickly found him guilty, they couldn't unanimously decide on a death sentence. Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele argued against Thompson's innocence, while Cornelius' sister believed life imprisonment was a harsher punishment. Pennsylvania's Governor, Josh Shapiro, opposes the death penalty, and the state hasn't executed anyone since 1999. Currently, 99 people are on Pennsylvania's death row.

PHILLIES

Nick Castellanos achieved a career-best with 103 RBI in a season, contributing significantly to the Philadelphia Phillies' 5-4 win over the New York Mets. This victory helps the Phillies maintain their lead for the top NL wild-card spot.

Castellanos' performance included a homer and four runs. Alec Bohm also hit a home run, and Bryce Harper contributed with two hits. Despite a challenging 2022 season, Castellanos has bounced back impressively this year. The Phillies and Mets will compete in six of the final nine games of the season. The Phillies are currently 3-4 against the Mets this year.
UNION

Philadelphia Union Clinches MLS Cup Playoffs Spot for Sixth Consecutive Year Amid Rising Expectations
The Philadelphia Union qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs, but there was no grand celebration as making the playoffs has become a standard expectation for the team. Coach Jim Curtin noted that while making the playoffs used to be a significant achievement, the team's ambitions have grown.
The Union's recent 2-2 draw with Charlotte FC, combined with other match outcomes, confirmed their playoff spot for the sixth consecutive season.
Historically, this is a significant shift as the Union had only made the playoffs once in their first six seasons. The team's current goal is to secure a top-four finish, with an ideal position being second to guarantee two rounds of home games. The Union have six more games to play, emphasizing the tight competition in the East.
