Exeter Township School District Addresses Transportation and Training Initiatives in Recent Board Meeting
In a recent special board meeting of the Exeter Township School District, Superintendent Dr. Christy Haller highlighted the ongoing transportation challenges due to a shortage of bus drivers. While initial steps have stabilized transportation, further amendments are necessary, especially regarding the walkability of certain bus stops. Outsourcing some transportation needs and adjustments to bus schedules are being considered.
A significant development from the meeting was the approval of a collaboration with the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU) to provide bus transportation for special education routes without any regular monthly costs. Additionally, Exeter will facilitate transport for five Antietam students to non-public schools, receiving credits from BCIU against their existing contract.
The board also approved a virtual training program for 51 staff members, at a cost of $1,125, and discussed potential acquisitions of FUN HUB subscriptions, a digital resource tool, costing $7,125 in total. Several contractual agreements focusing on the provision of special education services and student support for the 2023-2024 academic year are under consideration.
Lastly, the board is preparing for the upcoming Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA) elections, where they will vote for various significant positions and candidates, emphasizing collaborative efforts to improve the regional educational environment.
Reading Mayor Extends Splash Pad Hours to Beat the Heat Wave
In light of the anticipated heatwave this week, Reading Mayor Eddie Morán has mandated the continuation of operations at all city splash pads, according to an official statement from the municipality.
Initially scheduled to shut down post Labor Day holiday, the splash pads situated in different parks across the city will instead stay operational. This initiative aims to offer children a respite from the looming period of elevated temperatures and humidity levels.
The following playground venues possessing splash pads will adhere to their usual operating timings:
- Reading City Park Splash Areas
- 11th & Pike Playground: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
- Pendora Park: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
- City Park: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
As the city braces for the heat wave, the local government encourages the residents of Reading to exercise safety measures, which include hydrating adequately, seeking air-conditioned spaces, donning light and breathable attire, and minimizing exposure to the outdoors whenever feasible.

Manhunt for Escaped Inmate Danelo Cavalcante Intensifies as Police Extend Search Zone
The manhunt for the escaped inmate, Danelo Cavalcante, in Chester County enters its sixth day with police extending the search area southwards after a trail camera spotted Cavalcante at Longwood Gardens.
Helicopters are broadcasting messages from Cavalcante's mother, urging him to surrender. The local populace, particularly in Pocopson Township, is experiencing heightened police activity and inconveniences, including vehicular searches and early morning alerts advising them to secure their homes.
The police believe Cavalcante has burglarized a home for supplies. Residents hope for a quick resolution, although police indicate that the search might extend for a considerable period.
A $10,000 reward has been announced for information leading to Cavalcante's capture.
Man Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter after 7-year-old Dies in Tragic Pickup Truck Accident
A man named Marin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and vehicular homicide following the death of a 7-year-old girl who fell from his pickup truck and was run over.
The incident occurred in Montgomery County on August 22. Marin, known to take neighborhood children for rides in his truck with low sidewalls, had taken the girl and four other kids for a ride that day.
The girl leaned over the sidewall, fell, and suffered a fatal head injury. The autopsy confirmed her death as a homicide caused by blunt impact injuries. Marin, who has turned himself in, is also charged with endangering the welfare of children among other related charges.
He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on September 19, 2023, with a bail set at $50,000 unsecured. The case highlights the dangers of allowing children to ride in the open bed of a pickup truck, a practice that was described as illegal and recklessly dangerous by the District Attorney, Kevin R. Steele.

PHILLIES

Phillies Get Smoked 8-0 By Padres
Oh, what a night in the luminous San Diego ballpark where the Padres decided to throw a little impromptu party of their own, stealing the show with a spirited game of "Watch Us Crush the Phillies". It's almost as if they were saying, "Phillies, prepare to be amazed."
Now, who would be the star of this delightful soirée, you ask?
None other than Fernando Tatis Jr., the man of the hour, marking his own bobblehead night with a majestic home run that might just have left a dent in the moon. It seems Tatis decided to crank the charisma up to eleven, hitting a home run that was, let's say, in the neighbourhood of 431 feet. Oh yes, you read that right, four hundred and thirty-one! The ball probably needed a passport for such a journey.
And then there was the maestro, Pedro Avila, orchestrating a masterpiece on the mound, turning the Phillies' batting lineup into mere spectators in their own game. Walking up to the pitcher's mound, you could almost hear a symphony playing in the background as he showcased a performance reminiscent of a seasoned orchestra conductor, waving his baton, or should we say his pitching arm, with grace and precision. The Phillies were left merely chasing shadows, probably wondering if they had accidentally walked onto a Broadway show instead of a baseball game.
But wait, there's more.
Our dashing debutant wasn't just a one-man show. Oh no, the Padres were hosting a full-on fiesta with guests like Xander Bogaerts and Luis Campusano turning up the heat and sprinkling a little extra spice on the Phillies' already simmering woes. It was a soiree of spectacular hits and runs, with an open invitation to everyone except, perhaps, the Phillies' pitcher, Michael Lorenzen, who seemed to be having a bit of a rough time keeping up with the Padres' relentless party pace.
Let's not forget the cherry on top, a delightful catch that seemed to have been plucked straight out of a ballet performance. Edmundo Sosa, stepping in for the busy new dad Trea Turner, added a touch of class with a leaping catch that could make even a gymnast nod in approval.
In the end, it was a night where the Padres reminded everyone that baseball isn't just a game, it's a dazzling show where the stars aren't afraid to shine bright, leaving the spectators, and perhaps the Phillies, with twinkles in their eyes and smiles on their faces.
Bravo, Padres, bravo!
