57th Annual Duryea Day Showcases Antique Cars and Trucks
The 57th Annual Duryea Day Antique and Classic Car and Truck Show and Flea Market displayed approximately 500 vehicles at Boyertown Community Park on September 2.
Organized by the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles and the Pottstown Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America, the event welcomed families to witness a diverse range of cars, trucks, and motorcycles from various eras and styles. Cadillac was the spotlighted brand this year, with a 1904 Cadillac B Touring being the oldest car showcased.
The event is named after automotive pioneer Charles Duryea, who, with his brother Frank, is credited with creating the first commercially available car in the U.S. Some of Duryea's creations are housed in the museum. Duryea Day is the museum's most significant fundraising event, with the funds generated aiding the institution in its commitment to preserving and showcasing Pennsylvania's transportation history.
Apart from the vehicle showcase, attendees enjoyed a demonstration by the Friends of Reading Police Sheriff K-9 Unit and got a glimpse of the museum’s summer exhibit themed around the movie "Back to the Future." The event also featured a performance by strongman Tom Kelly "The Irish Anvil," who demonstrated various strength feats.
Several food options were available for attendees, with Helping Hands, Inc. making their debut, serving a variety of dishes, including a unique sandwich named "Wendy" that swapped traditional buns with grilled glazed donuts. The proceeds from their sales support programs for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Escaped Convict Danelo Cavalcante Spotted in Chester County
Escaped Convict Danelo Cavalcante Spotted in Chester County
Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan reported that a surveillance video captured images of the escaped convict, Danelo Cavalcante, 34, who is a convicted murderer. The footage, recorded at 1:43 a.m. on Lenape Road in Pocopson Township, showed Cavalcante a few days after his escape from Chester County Prison.
Ryan described the convict as wearing pants, a white t-shirt, white sneakers, and carrying a backpack. It's believed he was in prison-issued pants and shorts during his escape on August 31. Cavalcante stands at 5 feet and weighs 120 pounds, with distinguishing long, curly black hair.
With the community on high alert, the police have pursued over 100 tips, some of which suggest possible break-ins within a 1-2 mile radius of the prison. Captain Robert Bailey of the Pennsylvania State Police emphasized their commitment to thoroughly investigating all leads.
Convicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend in 2021, Cavalcante is also sought for a separate incident from 2017 in Brazil.
As the manhunt intensifies, over 100 law enforcement officials, including the U.S. Marshals, have been actively involved. Clark from the police department highlighted the increased law enforcement presence since Cavalcante's recent sighting.
Residents are urged to check their surveillance systems for any potential clues. A $10,000 reward has been announced for information leading to Cavalcante's capture. Those with any leads are encouraged to immediately contact 911.

Animal Rescuer Jailed for Neglect Despite Probation Terms
Holly Erin Schiller, who once ran an animal rescue from her home in Honey Brook, has been sentenced to prison after failing to abide by the terms of her probation. Schiller had previously been found guilty of severe neglect, causing some animals to starve to death under her care.
Judge Analisa Sondergaard had granted Schiller a probationary period under strict guidelines. However, the terms were violated when Schiller left the animals with family members instead of a non-family care provider as mandated.
Despite Schiller's attorney pointing to her emotional and psychiatric challenges as reasons for her choices, Judge Sondergaard held her to account, highlighting the importance of her adhering to the set guidelines. Schiller was sentenced to serve between 30 days and 23 months in prison, with eligibility for parole only after she can show proof that the dogs have been appropriately re-homed.
The initial charges against Schiller came after horrific conditions were reported at her Babushka Animal Rescue operation. Animals were found in deplorable states, with some even found dead. This was in stark contrast to her own pets, which were in good health, highlighting a disturbing selective neglect.
Russell Harper, who investigated the scene, labeled it one of the most heartbreaking he has seen in his 15-year career, emphasizing the need for Schiller to never be in the position to care for animals again. The gravity of her actions has left many questioning her sincerity and commitment to the wellbeing of the animals she claimed to rescue.
Reading Police Seek Two Fugitives on Separate Charges
Julian Acosta, 37, formerly residing on West Greenwich Street's 400 block in Reading, is being sought on burglary accusations. Surveillance footage from July 19 allegedly captures Acosta unlawfully removing two motorcycles, collectively valued at $1,600, from a Pike Street residence. Formal charges of felony theft were lodged against him by Reading police on Aug. 11. Acosta stands approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs around 220 pounds.
In another unrelated case, Nazareth Badia, 22, previously of Locust Street's 300 block in Reading, is wanted for simple assault. On June 17, Badia allegedly made threats against a woman, cautioning her against a Florida trip, followed by physical assault including punches to her face and head, and even biting her. Badia reportedly fled when the victim's family intervened. He is approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds.
For any information on these individuals, the public is encouraged to contact the sheriff's department's warrant division at 610-478-6390. For a full list of Berks County's most wanted, visit the official county website at www.countyofberks.com/departments/sheriff/most-wanted.

PHILLIES

Phillies Clinch Victory Against Brewers with Seventh Inning Surge
On Sunday, the Philadelphia Phillies overcame a quiet start to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2. Alec Bohm and J.T. Realmuto shifted the momentum with consecutive home runs in the seventh inning, ensuring the Phillies didn't face a series sweep. Their resilience was notable, as they remained hitless until the sixth inning.
Wade Miley of the Brewers was on form, leading them to a 2-0 lead and preventing a hit until Trea Turner's two-out single in the sixth. The single was followed by Nick Castellanos with an RBI double. Despite Miley's strong start, the seventh inning saw the Phillies gain ground. After Bohm's home run, Realmuto hit a mammoth 443-foot drive, securing back-to-back scores.
Though Turner showcased his skills with two hits, he did not manage a home run. This came after a five-game homer streak that equaled a Phillies record.
The Brewers almost reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning, but the Phillies' reliever Matt Strahm countered the threat. Despite solo home runs by William Contreras and Mark Canha, the Brewers struggled to capitalize on other opportunities. They notably went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
Ranger Suárez of the Phillies, fresh from the injured list, made a four-inning appearance, allowing two runs, five hits, and two walks. His contribution was followed by five scoreless relief innings from Jeff Hoffman, Seranthony Domínguez, Strahm, José Alvarado, and Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel earned his 22nd save for the Phillies, strengthening their position in the NL wild-card race.
Miley finished his 6 1/3 inning stint with four runs, four hits, three walks, and two strikeouts.
As for what's next, the Phillies will kick off a three-game series against San Diego on Monday. The projected starting pitchers are RHP Taijuan Walker for the Phillies and LHP Rich Hill for the Padres.

He was well-supported by Daniel Gazdag, who also scored before exiting the game due to a potential knee injury re-aggravation. Kai Wagner played a pivotal role with three assists, aiding the Union to climb to the fourth position in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Red Bulls initially took the lead with a goal from Omir Fernandez, but their momentum was stifled following a yellow card for Sean Nealis in the 44th minute. The Union capitalized on this, with goals from Jakob Glesnes and Damion Lowe, securing a comfortable lead and eventually the win, which marked their third consecutive victory over the Red Bulls in regular season play. The win places them just a point behind the second position in the Eastern Conference, making their playoff prospects brighter.
