Reading Liederkranz Competes for USA TODAY's Top Oktoberfest 2023 Honor

The Reading Liederkranz is vying against 19 other venues for the title of the best Oktoberfest celebration in the U.S., as part of USA TODAY's Top 10 Readers' Choice Awards for 2023.

This beloved Berks County event in Lower Alsace Township, known for its authentic celebration of German culture, attracts numerous attendees annually. The entirely volunteer-run festivity reinvests all profits into the subsequent year's Oktoberfest.

Historically, Reading Liederkranz has a strong reputation in Oktoberfest celebrations, having clinched the top position in 2015 and 2019. Voting concludes on Sept. 4, with winners revealed on Sept. 15.

The anticipated Oktoberfest will take place from Sept. 27 to Oct. 1 at 143 Spook Lane in Lower Alsace Township, the home of Reading Liederkranz.

Reading Mayor Proposes Reduction in Parking Fines; Council Calls for Deeper Review

Reading Mayor Eddie Moran has proposed two initiatives to decrease parking fines in the city. Working with the Reading Parking Authority, he's suggesting a 10-minute no-enforcement period at Penn Street meters and a reduction in existing parking violation charges.

The community's feedback influenced these changes, aimed at preventing illegal parking without heavily fining residents. Councilwoman Marcia Goodman-Hinnershitz highlighted the need for an in-depth look at the long-standing parking issues and the challenges the parking authority faces in collecting fines. The council will discuss the proposals further before making a decision.

Shillington Man Sentenced to 35-70 Years for Fatally Stabbing, Strangling Mother; Used Stolen Card for Heroin Purchase

23-year-old Jakob A. Murray from Shillington was sentenced to 35-70 years for the murder of his mother, Jill Murray.

After committing the crime, he stole her car and credit card to buy heroin in Philadelphia. The murder was discovered by the victim's boyfriend, leading to Murray's arrest. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a stab wound to the neck.

Boyertown Man Faces Federal Charges for Role in January 6 Capitol Riot

James Wayne Maryanski, a 52-year-old resident of Boyertown, Berks County, has been charged with civil disorder and assaulting officers using a dangerous weapon during the U.S. Capitol breach on January 6, 2021.

Arrested last Friday, Maryanski was set for his initial court appearance in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on Monday. Federal authorities believe he was among the rioters who overpowered police barriers near the Peace Circle Monument.

Allegedly, Maryanski sprayed officers with a chemical irritant before entering the Capitol via a broken window. Post-riot, he reportedly made a Facebook post about his involvement, hinting that the events of January 6 were a "dry run."

PHILLIES

Trea Turner Dominates with Home Runs, Aiding Phillies in Victory Over Angels

Trea Turner's impressive hitting streak continues, contributing seven homers this month for the Phillies, who have secured 52 in August alone. Turner, aiming for a return to the World Series with the NL champions, voiced his aspirations after Philadelphia's 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.

Turner showcased his skills by scoring two home runs, while Bryce Harper landed a two-run homer. Turner, previously a World Series champion with Washington in 2019, played a pivotal role in the Phillies' fourth consecutive win.

Despite an inconsistent performance from the Phillies' top earners earlier in the season, August has witnessed an upsurge in their batting prowess. Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Nick Castellanos have collectively contributed 23 homers this month.

In a much-awaited face-off between former MVPs, Harper and Shohei Ohtani, it was Turner who drew attention with his consistent hits and exceptional defensive play. He has now secured hits in 17 consecutive home games and has maintained an average of over .300 in August.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson commended Turner's performance, emphasizing the threat he poses when in form. Meanwhile, Ohtani received accolades from Harper, highlighting his unique talent in both batting and pitching. However, Ohtani will not be pitching for the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury.

The game's statistics further revealed Angels' Lucas Giolito allowing five runs, while the Phillies' Taijuan Walker gave up three. Craig Kimbrel closed the game, securing his 21st save.
