Reading celebrated its 275th anniversary with a 21-mile bike race on Skyline Drive, attracting 138 participants.
While many raced competitively, others enjoyed the experience and camaraderie. Connor Thompson emerged victorious in a close finish. The event had a festive atmosphere, featuring music and food. The race also served as a nod to Reading's bicycle manufacturing history, reminding attendees of the city's longstanding connection to cycling.
Community participation was robust, and proceeds from the event are expected to benefit several local causes.

PHILLIES

Phillies Dominate Cardinals in 3-0 Victory, Completing Series Sweep
In a commanding performance, Aaron Nola gave up just one hit and struck out nine across seven innings, helping the Philadelphia Phillies, the NL wild-card leaders, to seal a 3-0 win against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, achieving a three-game sweep.
Johan Rojas showcased his form with three hits, including a double, while Bryce Harper contributed with an RBI single. This impressive victory comes after the Phillies, the defending NL champions, outperformed the Cardinals with a score difference of 22-3 throughout the series.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson praised his team, noting, “We delivered offensively throughout the series, backed by solid defense and remarkable pitching."
The final innings saw José Alvarado maintain the momentum with a scoreless eighth, while Craig Kimbrel ensured the two-hit shutout, recording his 20th save in 22 attempts with a scoreless ninth.
Expressing confidence in the team's momentum, Kyle Schwarber said, "We're peaking at the right time. We need to maintain this momentum."
The Cardinals, on the other hand, are experiencing a tough phase, losing nine of their last 11 games. This was their 11th shutout, while the Phillies registered their fourth shutout this season.
Nola (12-8) showcased his prowess post Tommy Edman's opening double, setting down 21 of the subsequent 22 players. Reflecting on Edman's at-bat, Nola said, “I realized the need to focus. My initial pitches lacked competitiveness.”
Gorman's walk during the fifth inning was the sole hiccup over that period. St. Louis' subsequent hit was Paul Goldschmidt's double against Kimbrel.
Thomson lauded Nola, emphasizing his ability to unsettle the opposition.
Nola, among the top in the NL for strikeouts and innings pitched, enhanced his season figures to 174 strikeouts in 167⅓ innings. Remarkably, in 27 starts, he's kept the opposition from hitting a home run five times.
Schwarber's 436-foot homer right at the game's commencement off Drew Rom (0-2) marked his 36th this season. In 2022, Schwarber had led the NL with 46 home runs.

The Phillies strengthened their lead with Trea Turner’s sacrifice fly in the fifth, scoring Rojas. Harper’s single in the seventh solidified their three-run lead.
Nola acknowledged the team's robust performance, saying, "We've been fiercely attacking the baseball."
On the Cardinals' side, Rom, who joined from Baltimore earlier this month, allowed two runs from five hits over 5⅓ innings. Despite striking out six and walking one, the young lefty has had a challenging start. Recollecting his debut, where he conceded six runs in less than four innings, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said, "He showcased better control this time. This was a noticeable improvement."
READING FIGHTIN PHILS

Fightin Phils Clinch Series with 2-0 Victory Over Harrisburg; Homestand Begins Tuesday
David Parkinson gave a stellar performance by restricting Harrisburg to just two singles, leading the Fightin Phils to a 2-0 win in Sunday's final series game at FNB Field.
Both of Reading's runs were clinched in the third inning: Oliver Dunn delivered an RBI triple to bring Carlos De La Cruz home, and subsequently, Dunn scored courtesy of an RBI single by Jhailyn Ortiz.
Following this triumph, the Fightin Phils clinched 4 out of the 6 games in the series. They're set to kick off a 12-game stretch at FirstEnergy Stadium on Tuesday.
