Berks County Gears Up for 2023-2024 Antietam Lake Park Deer Control Program

Berks County authorities have begun preparations for the Antietam Lake Park deer control initiative for the 2023-2024 season.

Archery hunters can mark their calendars for September 16, 2023, through January 27, 2024, while noting that hunting is generally banned on Sundays. However, exceptions are made for November 12, 19, and 26. The hunting times are set from 30 minutes pre-sunrise to 30 minutes post-sunset.

It's imperative that hunters get both USDA Wildlife Services approval and a valid permit before hunting in Antietam Lake Park. All participants are also expected to adhere to the Pennsylvania Game Commission regulations.

To be part of the program, hunters need to go through an application process, prove their proficiency through a test, and participate in an orientation covering safety and ethical hunting practices. The main objective of this initiative is to mitigate the adverse effects of the deer population on county parks.

This deer management strategy is a collaborative effort between the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department and the USDA Wildlife Services.

Interested parties can learn more or inquire about the Waiting List Application by calling the USDA Wildlife Services at 610-916-1415.

Legendary game show host Bob Barker, best known for "Truth or Consequences" and "The Price Is Right," has passed away at 99.

Beyond his television career, Barker was a fervent animal rights advocate. Starting his television journey in 1956, he retired in 2007 after over 50 years on air. He also hosted the Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants but departed the former due to their awarding of fur coats. Despite controversies during his tenure, Barker remained a beloved figure.

Born in 1923, he served in World War II and was married to his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jo Gideon, until her death in 1981. Barker's commitment to animal rights shone through his iconic signoff: โ€œHave your pets spayed or neutered.โ€

PHILLIES

Wheeler's 10 Ks Power Phillies to Record-Breaking 12-1 Victory Over Cardinals

Zack Wheeler showcased a dominant performance, striking out 10 batters, as the Philadelphia Phillies set a new team record with the most home runs in a single month. They defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 12-1.

While the Phillies celebrated 48 homers in August, Bryce Harper contributed with a double and two more hits.

For the Cardinals, Luken Baker scored his first major league home run. Despite a strong start, Dakota Hudson from the Cardinals gave up five runs in almost six innings. The Phillies further widened the gap with seven runs in the seventh inning.

READING FIGHTIN PHILS

Fightin Phils' Spirited Comeback Falls Short in 7-6 Defeat to Harrisburg

The Fightin Phils staged a strong comeback after falling behind early on, yet narrowly missed out, ending in a 7-6 defeat against Harrisburg at FNB Field on Saturday.

Despite being down 7-1 post the third inning, the Fightin Phils made a spirited recovery, notching three runs in the fourth and another two in the eighth, reducing the lead to a mere point. Although Nick Ward kicked off the ninth inning with a double for the Phils, he was left on third base when the game concluded.

This setback ended Reading's winning spree of three games. They now look forward to clinching a series victory in Sunday's concluding match.

UNION

Philadelphia Union

Gazdag's Penalty Pushes Philadelphia Union to 3-1 Victory Over Struggling D.C. United

Daniel Gazdag's penalty strike, his 10th goal of the season, led Philadelphia Union to a 3-1 triumph over D.C. United on Saturday.

Mikael Uhre and Jack McGlynn also scored for Philadelphia, marking their third consecutive league victory.

Despite their success, the Union's Jose Martinez left the game with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, D.C. United's defensive issues persisted, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy, especially after their third straight loss. D.C.โ€™s Theodore Ku-DiPietro managed a late goal, but their challenges compounded when goalkeeper Tyler Miller exited due to a leg injury.
