Berks County Jail Secures $302,500 COCA Grant to Boost Opioid Treatment Initiatives
The Berks County Jail System has received a $302,500 grant from the Council on Chemical Abuse (COCA) to enhance opioid treatment for inmates. Funded by the Berks County Opioid Settlement, the grant will cater to medication costs and medical personnel wages.
This initiative intends to counteract the opioid crisis in Berks County. Additionally, COCA funds other programs, including transportation for those in recovery, a workforce development program, a collaborative recovery support venture, and a weekly support group for families affected by substance abuse.

Chester County Man Faces Potential Jail Time for Threatening Teen with Gun in Prank
A Chester County man, Gary Raymond Marquette, faces potential jail time after admitting to pointing an unloaded gun at a 13-year-old outside a Caln Township pizza restaurant as a prank. Marquette, 68, pleaded guilty to a count of terroristic threats.
Though typically such offenses result in probation, the use of a firearm might lead to a six to seven-month imprisonment. The incident took place when Marquette, inside his van, aimed a .22 caliber gun at the teen. Initially, Marquette claimed the weapon was a non-functional starter pistol, but police found an operational .22 caliber gun in his vehicle.
Marquette did not have a permit for the concealed weapon. All other charges were dropped in exchange for his guilty plea to making terroristic threats.

Montgomery County Tackles Dispatcher Burnout Amid Staffing Challenges
Montgomery County's Emergency Communications Operations Center is actively addressing staffing shortages and trying to prevent dispatcher burnout. This move follows a National Emergency Number Association survey which revealed that 74% of call center operators and supervisors experience burnout, anxiety, and fatigue.
Dispatcher Craig Michelbacher mentioned the challenges of handling consecutive 911 calls and keeping up with evolving technology. "Now, we're managing a range of tasks. Alarm calls can even come through texts," he said. His colleague, Amanda Rosentreter, emphasized the need for more staff, noting that dispatchers often handle the workload meant for two.
Kevin Rairdon, the Assistant Director, pointed out the difficulty in finding applicants with essential skills like map-reading and typing. "Our staffing levels are a concern, leading to quick burnout. Last year, a dispatcher would handle 75 calls per shift, but now it's between 100 and 125," Rairdon elaborated.
To combat these issues, the center is training dispatchers on the latest technology and ensuring mental health services are readily available. Rairdon stressed that, unlike other centers, they haven't reached life-threatening wait times and are determined to prevent it.
To further alleviate the problem, Montgomery County has initiated a study focusing on competitive salaries and retention strategies for operators. The results are expected by the end of 2023.

PHILLIES

DeJong Shines in Giants Debut with Key Hits in 8-6 Victory Over Phillies
In his debut with the Giants, Paul DeJong made a mark with a two-run homer in the fourth and a crucial two-run single in the 10th, contributing to San Francisco's 8-6 win against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. Despite a challenging series and a blown save by Camilo Doval, the Giants managed to end 2-4 on their trip.
DeJong expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute right from the start. San Francisco's struggle since August 5 was evident, dropping from the top wild-card spot to a tie for the third. However, in the 10th inning, DeJong's timely single followed by Thairo Estrada's sacrifice fly sealed the victory for the Giants. This was despite Doval's continuous struggles, which Giants manager Gabe Kapler acknowledged.
DeJong's journey to the Giants was a quick one. After being released by the Blue Jays, he trained briefly in St. Louis before being summoned to play in Philadelphia. In the fourth inning, he hit a two-run homer, pushing the Giants' lead.
On the Phillies' side, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner hit home runs. The team remained 3 1/2 games ahead in the NL wild card. Despite the loss, Schwarber commended the team's fighting spirit.
Lorenzen's performance was noted as not up to par, allowing eight hits, and four home runs during the game. Phillies manager, Rob Thomson, hinted at Lorenzen's recent decline since his no-hitter performance earlier in August. Meanwhile, Wilmer Flores performed well for the Giants, hitting a solo home run and achieving a single.
