Man Killed in Duryea Hillclimb Crash Identified as 66-year-old Kihurani Gakuu

The Berks County coroner's office has identified the victim of a fatal crash during Saturday's Duryea Hillclimb race. The victim, Kihurani Gakuu, 66, from East Caln Township, Chester County, was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. Gakuu's cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head, and the incident has been ruled an accident.

The crash occurred during the race's time trials when a driver lost control and struck a tree on Skyline Drive near Drenkel Field, according to Reading police.

The Duryea Hillclimb race, part of the Pennsylvania Hill Climb Association Championship Series, has been a community tradition since 1951. However, in light of the tragic accident, Duryea Hillclimb officials confirmed that racing would not take place on Sunday.

12-Year-Old Boy Dies After Disappearing in Blue Marsh Lake

A 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life after he went underwater in Blue Marsh Lake in Berks County, according to the county Coroner's office. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon when emergency crews were alerted to the lake around 2 p.m. following reports of the boy's disappearance.

Park visitors had alerted park rangers about the incident involving the young boy who had gone underwater, said Scott Sunderland of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The boy was visiting the lake with his family, who saw him go under the water. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

"Rangers arrived at the scene, placed marker buoys in the area where the eyewitnesses indicated the boy had gone under, and then park rangers, along with members of the public, formed a line to search along the shoreline," explained Sunderland.

The boy was found approximately an hour after he went underwater, about 50 feet from the shore in waters that were about 6 feet deep, Sunderland said. He was then taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Officials noted that the location where the boy was swimming was not in the designated swimming area at Blue Marsh. "We advise everyone to stay within the designated swimming area," Sunderland emphasized.

PHILLIES

Little Leaguers Enjoy Major League Action as Nationals Edge Phillies in 4-3 Victory

Bryce Harper encouraged a group of suburban Philadelphia Little League players, who had been eliminated from the World Series, to view their Williamsport experience as a stepping stone to future greatness. Harper may want to heed his own advice after going 0-for-3 and watching his Phillies lose two of three to the Nationals.

Trevor Williams led the Washington Nationals to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, delivering a strong performance with two-hit ball over six shutout innings. The win came in front of hundreds of Little League World Series players from around the world.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said the day was an unforgettable experience, even though it was a long one. In the ninth inning, the Nationals nearly lost the game as Jake Cave hit a two-run homer off Kyle Finnegan. However, Finnegan recovered, striking out pinch-hitter J.T. Realmuto to end the game and secure his 21st save.

The Phillies will play a three-game series against San Francisco, a matchup between the top-two wild card teams in the National League. Phillies manager Rob Thomson emphasized the importance of winning the series to put distance between them and San Francisco.

The Little League World Series players, hailing from as far as Nevada, Venezuela, and Japan, were treated like stars, participating in various activities and mingling with big leaguers. Some players even got advice from Harper and Washington’s Joey Meneses.

In the game, Keibert Ruiz hit a two-RBI double, and Dominic Smith had a two RBI single for a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Williams dominated against the NL wild-card leaders, with five strikeouts in seven innings. Major League Commissioner Rob Manfred and Little League President Stephen Keener were present.

The Phillies and Nationals had previously visited the Little League International Complex, engaging in activities with the young players. Phillies fans, many sporting team merchandise, were disappointed as Harper and Kyle Schwarber both went hitless. Nonetheless, the atmosphere was energetic as the young players enjoyed the major league game and the attention from their idols.

SIXERS

NBA Investigates James Harden's Comments Accusing 76ers President of Lying

The NBA is conducting an investigation into the allegations made by James Harden, where he accused Philadelphia 76ers president Daryl Morey of being a liar, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The league is expected to ascertain if any promises were made to Harden that might have violated salary cap regulations.

Potential penalties could be imposed if any violations are found, the source informed The Associated Press, speaking under the condition of anonymity as the investigation has not yet been publicly disclosed. The investigation was initially reported by ESPN.

Harden, who exercised his $35.6 million contract option for the upcoming season in June, appeared to have hoped for a trade from the organization. However, the 76ers have not yet come across a trade deal that they find favorable for the 2018 NBA MVP, who also topped the league in assists last season.

The visibly disgruntled Harden made his remarks about Morey, who was also his boss during his most successful seasons with the Houston Rockets, during a promotional event in China.

"Daryl Morey is a liar, and I will never be a part of an organization that he's a part of," Harden declared at the event, reiterating his statement for emphasis.

Lionel Messi Leads Inter Miami to Victory in Leagues Cup Final against Nashville SC

Inter Miami clinched victory over Nashville SC in the Leagues Cup final on Saturday night, winning 10-9 in a thrilling penalty shootout, with Lionel Messi playing a decisive role.

Messi, who has now scored 10 times in seven games since joining Inter Miami, found the net in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on a blocked pass from teammate Robert Taylor. Messi skillfully dribbled past Nashville defender Walker Zimmerman and fired a bending shot from just outside the penalty box into the top left corner of the net, leaving goalkeeper Elliot Panicco with no chance.

Despite being booed by the crowd every time he touched the ball prior to his goal, Messi's strike was met with cheers from the stadium. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who led Argentina to the World Cup title last year, was crucial in turning the game around for his team.

Nashville managed to level the score in the 56th minute when Fafa Picault’s header off a corner kick deflected off Miami’s Benjamin Cremaschi and into the net off goalkeeper Drake Callender.

Messi had another chance to score in the 71st minute, hitting the post from the same area he had previously scored. The match ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Miami striker Leonardo Campana could have secured victory in the final play of regulation time, but his sliding shot on an open goal hit the post. Messi held his head in his hands as the ball rolled out of play.

Messi confidently converted the first shot in the penalty shootout, and it was Callender who scored the go-ahead PK and made the title-clinching save.

"It’s a huge honor to play a role in our first win in a final," Callender said. "This team works so hard day-in, day-out to perform like this on a night like this. And to have it come down to the very end, it was amazing to see the grit and the belief of what we’re capable of. I’m blessed to be a part of it."

Throughout the 11 rounds of penalties, Callender remained focused. "I embraced the moment and believed in the work I put in, and it ended up going our way," he said.

"Music City" was buzzing with excitement as Nashville SC advanced to the final against Miami FC after beating Monterrey of the Mexican league. Ticket prices soared but eventually settled down, with the cheapest seats still costing several hundred dollars. Geodis Park was filled to capacity with 30,109 spectators.

Nashville native Reese Witherspoon presented the game ball, and two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo took shots on goal before the game. Both are minority owners of Nashville SC.
