UPS and Teamsters Reach Tentative Contract Agreement, Avoiding Nationwide Strike
United Parcel Service (UPS) and the Teamsters Union, representing 340,000 UPS employees, have reached a tentative contract agreement, potentially averting a nationwide strike.
The agreement includes benefits like higher wages and air conditioning in delivery trucks. It covers U.S. Teamsters-represented employees in small-package roles and is subject to ratification by union members.
The deal ensures existing full- and part-time UPS Teamsters will receive significant wage increases. Also, starting pay for part-time workers will increase to $21 per hour, up from $16.20.
The agreement has been welcomed by the Retail Industry Leaders Association, which anticipates the move will ease uncertainties in the retail sector.
U.S. Income Inequality Gap Narrows Slightly Amid Labor Market Shifts, but Challenges Remain
A recent study showed that before the pandemic, wage growth was higher for workers in the bottom 10% of wages than for those in the top 10%, indicating a potential reversal in the narrative of growing income inequality in the U.S.
This trend was fueled by minimum wage legislation and the competitive labor market caused by the "Great Resignation."
However, despite these gains, wage growth for low-wage workers appears to be slowing while it is increasing for high-wage workers. While this has slightly narrowed the income gap, those at the very top, who primarily earn from investments, continue to significantly outpace the rest.
Economists suggest measures such as higher minimum wages, more job opportunities for non-college graduates, student debt cancellation, and policies promoting better job creation and profit sharing to further reduce inequality.

PHILLIES

Phillies Rally Late to Score Stunning 4-3 Victory Over AL-Leading Orioles
In a thrilling turn of events, Alec Bohm drove in the winning run with a single, following Bryson Stott's game-tying RBI double in the ninth inning, helping the Philadelphia Phillies secure a 4-3 victory over the AL-leading Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday evening.
The ninth inning saw Yennier Cano (1-2) give up a single to Bryce Harper, who earlier in the sixth, had equalized for the Phillies with a solo home run. Cano managed a second out before conceding Stott's crucial double. The inning was extended after J.T. Realmuto reached first on an infield single off a short hop, which Jorge Mateo struggled to handle and throw in time.
Bohm's single flew past the infield, resulting in a resounding cheer from Phillies fans as they celebrated their team's come-from-behind win.
The Orioles were in the lead 3-2 in the eighth inning, courtesy of Ryan O'Hearn's home run off relief pitcher Matt Strahm. This led to a wave of excitement among the numerous Orioles fans present at Citizens Bank Park.
Yunior Marte (1-1) managed to keep the ninth inning scoreless, securing the win for the Phillies.
The ninth inning started with Cano getting Trea Turner out on a grounder. Turner, who is struggling with a .245 average, ended the night with no hits and an ejection in Monday's loss to Baltimore.
The Orioles took a 2-0 lead with RBI doubles from Austin Hayes and Adam Frazier off Phillies' starting pitcher Taijuan Walker. Orioles' starting pitcher Kyle Gibson held the Phillies to one run in the third, with Turner grounding out and Harper following suit to close the inning.
Gibson, previously with the Phillies for two seasons, is currently with the Orioles on a $10 million, one-year contract. He has been instrumental for the Orioles in 2023, leading the American League in starts.
Gibson successfully retired 11 straight while maintaining a 2-1 lead, the 11th being a strikeout of Turner. Turner's struggle this season was met with boos from Philly fans.
These boos turned into cheers when Harper hit his fifth home run of the season into the right-field seats, tying the game at 2. Harper, a beloved figure in Philadelphia since signing with the Phillies, had a successful previous season, earning the NL MVP and NLCS MVP as he led the Phillies to the World Series.
Turner, who was signed on a $300 million, 11-year contract, aimed to support the Phillies' World Series ambitions. However, his inconsistent performance has been met with frustration from the Phillies' faithful.
Katie Ledecky and Ryan Murphy Clinch Golds at Swimming World Championships, Ledecky Equals Phelps' Record
At the swimming world championships, Katie Ledecky claimed gold in the women's 1,500-meter freestyle, matching Michael Phelps' record of 15 individual world championship titles.
In the same event, fellow American Ryan Murphy triumphed in the men's 100 backstroke. Other winners included Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte in the women's 100 breaststroke, Australia's Kaylee McKeown in the women's 100 backstroke, and Matthew Richards of Britain in the men's 200 freestyle.
