Chris Guiliano, Daniel Boone Alumnus, Clinches Bronze in World Swimming Championships for Team USA
Chris Guiliano, a graduate of Daniel Boone, secured a bronze medal on Sunday as a member of the United States' 4×100 freestyle relay team at the world swimming championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
The final race saw Guiliano, along with teammates Ryan Held, Jack Alexy, and Matt King, conclude in third place with a time of 3:10.81. The gold was claimed by Australia with a time of 3:10.16, while Italy seized the silver medal finishing at 3:10.49.
Ryan Held set the pace for the U.S. team with a split time of 48.16. He was succeeded by Jack Alexy (47.56), then Guiliano (47.77). Matt King completed the race with a split of 47.32, narrowly outpacing China, which established a new Asian record with 3:11.38.
In the preliminaries, the United States demonstrated stellar performance with the leading time of 3:11.63. Guiliano, participating in his debut international meet, kicked off the relay with a 48.30 split, accompanied by teammates Destin Lasco, King, and Justin Rees.
Currently a junior at Notre Dame, Guiliano earned his place in the world championships by securing second place, right behind Alexy, in the 100-meter freestyle during the U.S. swimming nationals last month.
The 100 freestyle prelims are set to take place on Wednesday, with the final following on Thursday. Guiliano enters the competition with a seeding of 17th, carrying a time of 47.98.
Premier League Soccer Teams Make Their American Debut in Philadelphia During Summer Series
This past weekend, England's Premier League soccer teams made their way to America to participate in the inaugural Premier League Summer Series. Philadelphia had the honor of being the first U.S. city to host the series, attracting over 100,000 fans to Lincoln Financial Field in just two days.
The event saw supporters from various locations globally, including Australia, England, Indiana, and California. Fulham FC, for instance, enjoyed considerable fan support, reflecting the broad fanbase of these Premier League teams.
One fan, who spent part of his childhood in England before returning to Philadelphia, expressed astonishment at the immense American support for the league. The Summer Series presented an opportunity for many of these fans to witness their favorite teams play in person for the first time.
For fans like Colin Passey, who grew up in Brentford, West London, and later moved to New Jersey, the event was more than just a game. Passey, a devoted fan of Brentford FC, recalled how his late father never got to see the team reach the Premier League. The family felt it was almost preordained that Brentford's first game in the Premier League would be held in Philadelphia, just a bridge away from their new home in New Jersey, as a kind of tribute to Passey's father.

Elon Musk Announces Twitter's Iconic Blue Bird Logo to be Replaced with 'X'
Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter, is set to alter the social media giant's branding. He has unveiled plans to replace the site's traditional blue bird logo with the letter "X". The transition to the new temporary logo is anticipated to take effect sometime on Sunday. Additionally, the URL X.com will now redirect users to Twitter.
These modifications represent some of the most significant transformations for the social media platform since Musk acquired it last year.
Musk teased a potential new logo on Twitter just after midnight on Sunday, accompanying the announcement with a video showcasing a potential new design - a black and white sans-serif "X". Musk expressed his fondness for the letter "X", although he has offered little explanation for his affinity towards it.
Musk indicated the forthcoming changes as far back as October of last year, stating his acquisition of Twitter was a step towards creating the "everything app," likened to the all-encompassing WeChat app in China.
Ashlee Vance, author of "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future", described Musk's aim to create an app as integral to daily life as WeChat is in China. The app is used for various daily tasks, including communication, news consumption, shopping, rent payment, booking doctor appointments, and even paying fines.
Musk's previous ventures also demonstrated his preference for the letter "X". He named his online banking platform X.com, a name later dropped when it merged with a competitor to become PayPal. The third electric car model from Tesla is known as Model X, and his spaceflight company is often referred to as SpaceX.
Moreover, Musk and his then-partner, the musician Grimes, named their youngest son "X Æ A-12" in 2020.

PHILLIES

Bryce Harper showcased his athleticism in his second appearance at first base, delivering the decisive run with a 10th-inning single to guide the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-5 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday, thus dodging a three-game sweep.
Rob Thomson, Phillies' manager, praised Harper's adaptability to his new role, which was a shift from the outfield starting only on Friday night.
"It's fascinating to see how seamlessly Harper has adjusted to the pace of the game in this new position. It seems as if he's played there before," Thomson remarked.
"I've put in quite a bit of work," Harper said, underscoring his commitment to helping the team win in any capacity. "That's why they brought me here, and that's why I love being here."
Craig Kimbrel, the Phillies' closer, saw his first save opportunity of the season go awry when David Fry of the Guardians equalized the score at 4-4 with a solo homer in the ninth inning.
The game experienced a moment of confusion as the ball, after landing in the bleachers, bounced back onto the field. "I assumed it was a home run, then saw the ball rebounding back to left field. It was only confirmed as a home run by our third base coach, Mike Sarbaugh," Fry recalled.
The 10th inning started with Kyle Schwarber at second base. After Trea Turner was walked, Harper singled to the middle off Tim Herrin, giving the Phillies a lead. Following a sacrifice fly by J.T. Realmuto and a two-run single by Alec Bohm, the Phillies increased their lead to 8-4.
The Guardians attempted a rally in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Yunior Marte successfully closed the game, earning his second save.
Harper contributed significantly in defense as well, executing two excellent plays in the fourth inning and ending a fifth-inning threat with an unassisted double play. He also scored a groundout to tie the game in the fifth.
Thomson spoke highly of Harper's fiery playing style and dedication, saying, "It's practically impossible to ask Bryce Harper to hold back. He's always going to give it his all."
Harper's outstanding defensive plays in the fourth inning included a diving stop on Josh Bell’s sharply hit grounder, and another one to end the inning on a grounder from Will Brennan. In the fifth inning, he ended a potential threat with an unassisted double play.
Harper is currently playing at first base as he continues to recover fully from elbow surgery.
Despite the setback in the first inning with a bases-loaded balk by Xzavion Curry, Cleveland managed to secure a 3-1 lead.
Aaron Nola, the Phillies' pitcher, allowed three runs in seven innings, including solo homers to Kwan and Andrés Giménez.
The Guardians revealed that right-hander Gavin Williams developed a blister on his middle finger during Friday’s game. However, his coach, Carl Willis, remains hopeful that it won't affect his scheduled start against Kansas City on Wednesday.
