Christmas Tree Shops Set for Nationwide Liquidation, including Seven Stores in Pennsylvania

Discount retailer Christmas Tree Shops is set to liquidate all its stores, including the seven still operating in Pennsylvania, signaling the termination of its business operations.

The firm recently submitted documents to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, indicating the initiation of closing down sales across all store locations of the chain.

The Wall Street Journal reports that these liquidation sales might commence as early as this Thursday following the company's loan default that was supposed to fund its bankruptcy. Prospective buyers have until then to challenge the liquidation sales.

The locations of the seven stores in Pennsylvania are Allentown, Downingtown, Erie, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Moosic, and York.

The Massachusetts-headquartered chain initially declared bankruptcy in May, a consequence of its parent company's financial downfall.

Meta is set to launch its new app, Threads, in the coming week.

This development comes amid recent user dissatisfaction with Twitter, particularly its recent decision to limit the daily number of tweets visible to users. Threads, designed to directly compete with Twitter, is now open for pre-order for iPhone users on the App Store, and it is confirmed to be released on July 6-7, varying by user location. Meta also revealed a webpage with a countdown to the release.

Meta has been developing Threads under the Instagram brand for a while, and its existence was first disclosed in reports regarding the "Barcelona" project in May. Threads will enable users to share text, photos, and videos and promises to be a space where communities can convene and discuss various topics.

Despite its foundation on Instagram, Threads will exist as a standalone app. It is expected that Instagram users will be able to join Threads effortlessly, though it remains unclear whether access through a web browser will be possible, and it has been confirmed that there's no iPad version for now.

According to insider sources, Meta originally planned to launch Threads at the end of July but decided to expedite the process in response to Twitter users' discontent with the platform.

iPhone 15 and 15 Pro Series Expected to Feature Significantly Larger Batteries, Report Suggests

A new report suggests that the forthcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series will feature considerably larger batteries. The most significant increase is expected for the standard iPhone 15 model. The rumors, originating from Weibo and citing a source at Foxconn, suggest battery capacities for the new iPhones will be:

- iPhone 15: 3877mAh (an 18% increase)

- iPhone 15 Plus: 4912mAh (a 13.6% increase)

- iPhone 15 Pro: 3650mAh (a 14.1% increase)

- iPhone 15 Pro Max: 4852mAh (a 10.9% increase)

Battery life on iPhones is influenced by the battery size and the processor's efficiency. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to be powered by the A16 Bionic processor, based on the 5nm manufacturing process. The iPhone 15 Pro series, on the other hand, might use a new A17 Bionic chip, built with a more efficient 3nm fabrication process.

Apple could use these improvements to either focus on enhancing battery life with minimal performance gains, or maintain the battery life while significantly increasing the performance capabilities.

Judge Prohibits Biden Administration from Collaborating with Social Media Companies on 'Protected Speech' Censorship

U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty of Louisiana has issued an injunction, blocking several federal agencies and officials from the Biden administration from working with social media companies to suppress "protected speech." This ruling comes in response to a 2022 lawsuit by the attorneys general of Louisiana and Missouri, who claimed the federal government overstepped its bounds by trying to convince social media companies to address posts that could contribute to vaccine hesitancy or affect elections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Doughty noted "substantial evidence" of a widespread censorship campaign, likening the government's actions to an Orwellian 'Ministry of Truth.' The injunction prevents the federal government from "censoring the core political speech of ordinary Americans" on social media platforms.

Specifically, the injunction bars several government agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services and the FBI, from encouraging the removal, deletion, or suppression of protected free speech on social media platforms.

Despite this ruling, some exceptions were allowed, such as alerting social media companies of posts involving criminal activity, conspiracies, national security threats, and other dangers.

The Justice Department is reviewing the injunction and is evaluating its options. The Biden administration has consistently expressed its belief that social media platforms have a critical responsibility to monitor the effects of their platforms on the American public.

PHILLIES

Aaron Nola Leads Phillies to 10th Straight Road Win in Pitching Duel Against Former Teammate Zach Eflin

Philadelphia Phillies' Aaron Nola struck a career-equalling high of 12 strikeouts to lead his team to a 10th consecutive road victory against the American League (AL) leading Tampa Bay Rays.

This 3-1 win marks the Phillies' longest winning streak away from home since 1976, when they had a franchise-best 13 straight victories. Nola gave up one run and five hits over 7 1/3 innings, while his opposite number, Zach Eflin, who was making his first start against his former team, conceded two runs and four hits in seven innings.

Eflin had recently signed a $40 million, three-year contract with the Rays, the largest free-agent deal in their history. The friendly rivalry added excitement to the game, with both pitchers having played together for seven seasons with the Phillies. The Phillies scored their runs through second-inning doubles by Bryson Stott and Alec Bohm, a seventh-inning single by Stott, and an eighth-inning single by Bryce Harper.

Despite their top position in the AL, Tampa Bay has lost nine of their last 15 games. Their only run came from a home run by Wander Franco, Nola's final opponent. Craig Kimbrel secured the game for the Phillies, earning his 13th save in 13 chances.

FLYERS

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Veteran Marc Staal in $1.1 Million Contract Amid Rebuilding Phase

Veteran defenseman Marc Staal has signed a $1.1 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers for the upcoming season.

This move was announced by the team's general manager, Daniel Briere, who also shared the signing of winger Garnet Hathaway and center Ryan Poehling.

Staal's signing came as a pleasant surprise to the Flyers, as they didn't anticipate a player of his stature to show interest in their rebuilding team. Staal, who previously played for the Florida Panthers, helped them reach the Stanley Cup Final and is known for his consistent performance.

His signing fills the anticipated gap from the potential trading of Tony DeAngelo back to Carolina. The trade could be completed 12 months after DeAngelo's initial deal, which is due on July 7. DeAngelo was benched late in the previous season under coach John Tortorella.
