Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority Moves Forward with Plans to Restore Reading-Philadelphia Corridor Service

The Schuylkill River Passenger Rail Authority, with representatives from Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties, has voted to seek proposals for a consultant to develop plans to reintroduce passenger rail service between Reading and Philadelphia. This initiative is supported by a $750,000 federal grant awarded to the authority.
Before the authority's application to join a federal corridor train transportation program is reviewed, the Federal Railroad Authority has advised progressing with the development plan. The authority is expected to know in September whether it's been accepted into the Federal Rail Administration Corridor Identification and Development Program.
The proposed intercity passenger rail service would include stops in Reading, Pottstown, Phoenixville, Philadelphia, and New York. The communities have expressed their interest in having train stops, according to authority member Jim Gerlach. In addition, Scott France, executive director of the Montgomery County Planning Commission, confirmed Amtrak's support for the passenger rail project.

PHILLIES

Washington Nationals' pitcher Josiah Gray led his team to a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. Gray effectively stifled Philadelphia's key players, forcing two pop-ups and striking out a batter, leaving the potential go-ahead run stranded in the sixth inning. Nationals manager Dave Martinez praised Gray's ability to maintain focus and composure under pressure.
Stone Garrett's two-run homer contributed to the Nationals' win. Despite a strong performance from Phillies' starting pitcher Cristopher Sánchez, a critical throwing error by shortstop Trea Turner allowed Keibert Ruiz to reach base, setting the stage for Garrett's home run. The Phillies, who ended June with an 18-8 record, fell short due to a lack of big hits and finished the first half of the season at 43-38.
New Women's Professional Hockey League to Launch in North America with Notable Backing
A new women's professional hockey league is set to be launched in North America in January, with the objective of offering a stable and economically sustainable platform for top players. The league is expected to begin with six teams, split evenly between the U.S. and Canada.
While certain aspects, such as team locations, economic viability, and potential broadcasting deals remain unclear, the initiative has significant financial backing. Prominent backers include Mark Walter, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and his wife Kimbra, team President Stan Kasten, and tennis legend Billie Jean King.
The introduction of this league ends an ongoing standoff between the Professional Hockey Federation (PHF) and the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association (PWHPA). Notably, the new league might secure the support of the National Hockey League, much like the NBA backs the WNBA.
The PWHPA, having been in talks with Mark Walter Group and Billie Jean King Enterprises for over a year, expressed enthusiasm over the new venture, calling it the most significant development since women's ice hockey became an Olympic sport. The league is expected to attract top players from North America, Europe, and Asia.
The PWHPA, which has recently been certified as a union, has concluded negotiations on a collective bargaining agreement. If ratified, the deal will run through 2031 and promises a minimum salary of $35,000 for players on active rosters.
Among the uncertainties, the location of the six teams is still to be decided. Current PHF player contracts have been voided, but there's an agreement in place to pay contracted players a part of their salary through September. This new league aims to avoid the fate of its predecessors, such as the Canadian Women's Hockey League, which folded in 2019, and provide a viable long-term solution for professional women's hockey.
